Dogs or Bitches?

We are going to look at some puppies tomorrow.

If we do choose one, we will choose upon temperament, but it is worth considering the sex?

We have children, a large ish house and garden.

We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone. I can't make a mistake or have regrets, I absolutely have to get it right.

I don't know a rescue, I want a puppy to grow with the children.

I much prefer bitches. I have found them much more loyal than my boys who have all been quite fickle simple creatures

I found that the bitches have lived for me whereas the boys would have happily gone with whoever fed them first. This has made the bitches much easier to train but needier and both girls have had separation issues whereas the boys couldn’t care less.

Seasons can be a nightmare however I have spayed all of mine after one or two seasons. I also think bitches can be slightly more temperamental at times. Girls are also generally smaller in most breeds so it depends if you prefer a petite type or a larger example of whatever breed it is you’ve chosen.

My DF loves GS and has had about ten wide he was a nipper. He insists that he quo's only take a bitch GS, but has had dogs of other breeds. I wonder if sex/temperament are breed sensitive?

I have a bitch.
She is very affectionate but not not particularly clingy/needy, fairly independent.

From what I hear males are often more ‘cuddly, laidback’ and although they can be prone to sex sex aggression if entire I have heard that male to male fights tend to end with one submitting and forgiveness whereas bitches fight to the death and hold grudges.

On sex/temperament being breed dependant, female police/security dogs are known for being more ‘serious’ so if you are thinking female = more placid, motherly and I would be inclined to say that is probably not the case

Sex don't matter

It honestly doesn't matter,if you raise the dog right you should have a loyal pal,we've had males and females,we currently have only males but that's more down to DH's occupation (Dog handler).Every dog is different.

I have a 2 year old male bullmastiff (not neutered), a 6 year old female bullmastiff (spayed) and a 2.5 year old male border collie (neutered).
I have found that bitches are a lot more cuddly and loyal. My female mastiff does not ever leave my side even when visitors come, she's comes everywhere with me! She loves to try and sit on my knee and give me a cuddle! My two males are not really that bothered and would go to anyone who gave them food. In Saying this I used to have a staffy x mastiff and she was not in anyway loyal and tried to escape and run to anyone she could even on the lead.
Over all I don't think it really matters what sex as this is just my personal experience. If trained and brought up correctly either sex will just be as loving!

We have 2 male dogs, both neutered. They are so very loyal and loving it's unreal. They sit for hours being stroked by my autistic dd, she loves it.

They do love to play fight with each other though, but I was expecting that with 2 males !

I think it's how you bring them up.

I choose a dog simply because I didn't want to have to manage any seasons. I think it doesn't matter personality wise as all dogs are different so it just comes down to your own personal choice.

@Maneandfeathers I see bitches as never completely trusting you and prefer dogs as long as their food arrives, they have a warm bed and some toys they are content. So I prefer dogs.
So if you want a dog with an independent nature who could become very fixed on one person a butch is for you.
If you want a dog who is happy to slot in with whatever and will settle for anyone a dog is for you.

Dogs pee on things in the garden (plants, pots, toys, bikes, bins, anything at penis height) bitches pee on the ground. That is the only difference that bothers me tbh.

MaidenMotherCrone unless you get a dog like mine. He's coming up to 2.5 years old and has never cocked his leg. He pees like a girl .

The downside of that is that my grass is destroyed because of the concentrated pee patches.

Sex is not breed sensitive. Bitches and male dog wee will stain the grass, both sexes may hump.

Castration may be cheaper than spaying although if your dog has undescended testicles the price will be similar.

There will be no difference in temperament due to sex just temperament and genetics

@Lonecatwithkitten I agree about boys slotting in.

I currently have a male GSD who loves everyone. Would happily trot off with any old stranger who fed him. He’s quite happy to go off and sleep in another room or have some time alone.
My female GSD is much more family orientated, more protective and higher drive than him. She follows me everywhere including the toilet.

I have had 3 males and 3 females, all GSD and all similar in personality to the descriptions of the current two. The only ones I’ve had behavioural issues with have been the females funnily enough

I think the only solution is to have one of each!
