Restart vaccination another 5 weeks before walkies

Pups nearly 10 weeks we t for meet and greet at vets all lovely he's a healthy pup but they have restarted his vaccinations as they do different ones here so it will be another 4 week wait until his next lot and then another week after that.

Vet saying he needs to be socialised but I can't take him to any parks or outside .

I don't know may people with puppies Nd those who have older digs I have no idea if they are up to date with vaccinations.

Waiting for puppy class trainer to call me back to see if he will still be allowed to go to puppy group as she was holding a place for him after his second vacs but that won't be for another 5 weeks..

How do I socialise a dog, when we can't go out and meet dogs?

You’ll be fine. I’ve never vaccinated any of my dogs and they’ve never caught any illnesses or diseases.

At ten weeks out your puppy will still have it’s mother’s antibodies (from her milk) - meaning that even if the puppy did come into contact with something, it’s body will be able to fight it.

It’s really important you socialise the pup. Don’t be scared into thinking it’ll keel over and die if you dared to put it on the ground - it won’t. If you’re worried then just avoid dog parks.

If I could do the puppy thing again I really wouldn't have done all the puppy parties and 'socialisation' with lots of puppies and dogs. All that taught my dog is that he thought he could meet every dog and people he saw.

In your shoes I would try and find one or two calm sensible older (vaccinated) dogs to just spend a bit of time with. Maybe your trainer knows someone who might be able to help.

For other socialisation it's important to get them used to noises and things they may encounter. If your puppy is too big to carry you could sit in the car with the boot open listening and watching cars and people go by. You can sit in cafes or garden centres and again get used to people and different environments.

The other thing to do is to ring around other vets to see if they do the same vaccinations as the original ones.

Vets love to scare owners. Well to be fair they are the ones that see infected dogs that haven't been vaccinated. It's their job to do all they can to avoid that.

You've been incredibly lucky that most others do vaccinate

I would do as above poster suggested and call other practices to see if they use they same brand. Otherwise you can carry puppy in your arms round places like Pets at Home, sit outside coffee shops, pubs etc - busy places where they will see and hear lots of different things. Can be hard on the arms if they are a large breed though!

I wouldn't risk taking an unvaccinated puppy out with other dogs unless you are 100% sure they are vaccinated. I work in a veterinary practice and puppies can and do die from these diseases or at the very least end up very ill. Not so long ago our kennels were full with adults and puppies from the same breeder with parvo. It was horrific. All the puppies and half of the adults died. The owner was horrified - she has been using homeopathic remedies in place of vaccinations.

You can, you just need to carry him when he's small enough either in your arms or in a sling/backpack carrier or drive around with him.

Ours (medium to large breed) came everywhere with us and we either carried him, or drove around and sat with him with the boot open so he could look around when he was too big People fussed over him constantly because he was the most ridiculously adorable pup, and we socialised him with older, vaccinated dogs owned by friends. We also had a steady stream of visitors (men, women, children, people that own cats, people that own dogs, so a massive range of sights and smells for him) for short visits over the first three weeks, so despite the fact his breed is know for being standoffish with new people he's Mr Sociable now

Me and my dd have hoodies with a puppy pouch (I use to smuggle him on the school run) he is very very relaxed in there so will start taking him around the local park and shops/garden centres that allow dog's I have actually had an offer of a puppy date from a mum at school with an older up to date vacs dog. He is VERY interested in dogs even met a very old lab at the vets who he thought was amazing....I can't believe he will grow to be that size!!

This happened to my mum and dad, the got a puppy from a different county and the vaccinations are different.
They waited the full time and puppy was absolutely fine and is very sociable and friendly with other dogs.

I’ll tell that to my next full surgery list? And of the 15 patients I’ve seen die from preventable disease this year shall I?

Vets love to scare owners -no vets work hard to stop pets dying from preventable disease. We are the owners who spend hours cleaning and caring for the parvo puppies only to have them die in your arms and have the owner yell at you that you are only in it for the money.
Parvo is the single most awful disease to be involved in treating.

Along with all the other great suggestions I would play socialisation sounds to him too via you tube. Sounds like traffic, fireworks, guns etc. If you search for dog socialization sounds it should come up. The idea is you play these very quietly to begin with then gradually increase the volume. The more pup gets used to these noises the less fazed he/she will be by them when they encounter them in rl

Can you not just take him to a vets that do the same vaccine? My puppy had her first vaccine at the breeders, I called in to the vets I use to check they used it, they didn’t.

They’re getting it in for me for when she’s ten weeks from. another vets. Why wait five weeks?

We found we had to have an additional vac so had to stop puppy classes as we didn’t want to risk it. Thankfully as he’s a smaller breed we’ve been taking him out in a dog bag.
