We're thinking of getting another mixed breed dog. We already have a Chorkie and like the look of labradoodles or cockapoos. What's everyone got?

thatsmyspace Thanks, he's my pride and joy!

He was a rescue, sort of. He was one of a litter born at Dogs Trust after their parents had been rescued from an abusive situation.

If there were no KC regulations and selective breeding (eugenics), pop-eyed brachycehalic, or ridiculously low slung dogs popping discs would die out and on average, dogs would be healthier.

Cross breeding does not automatically mean back yard breeding or over-whelped dogs and it is silly to pretend they are the same problem. Good owners of healthy dogs are positively discouraged from breeding with other healthy dogs by the KC to keep to some ridiculous outdated notion of what a dog should look like. Almost no dogs catch elk or go down holes after sewage or whatever else they have been overbred to do. Of course some breeds have similar genetic problems and there may be issues with some crossbred individuals etc etc but ON AVERAGE THEY WILL BE HEALTHIER. It is a fundamental principle of genetics that interbreeding leads to expression of horrible recessive traits and outbreeding leads to hybrid vigour.

Yes puppy farms dreadful
No, cross breed dogs not dreadful.

@HowlsMovingBungalow we were on a list for our labXspringer, were interviewed and had to give details about our living arrangements etc, met the pups at 10 days, 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks, and were told which pup we were allowed rather than choosing one. It does happen.

Drogosnextwife · 07/02/2019 18:09

I have a sprocker spaniel. Cocker/Springer cross. He is a lovely do with a very good nature, great with kids. He was a bit crazy when he was younger but has calmed down a bit now. I'll get a pic.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 07/02/2019 18:09

That is a good thing @LeBelle Smile

FrenchyQ · 07/02/2019 18:12

This is my Jack russell cross Chihuhua....we rescued him from a puppy farm as he was going to be euthanised as he looked more jack russell than chihuahua.

LaBelleSausage · 07/02/2019 18:12

@HowlsMovingBungalow I completely agree, we wouldn’t have got a puppy from owners who didn’t care Smile

FrenchyQ · 07/02/2019 18:14

My puppy is a complete mix - Parsons Russel terrier, shih tzu, chihuahua, Maltese, Yorkshire terrier and other unknown breeds. He's the kindest, most soppy dog you will ever meet

I know reputable poodle breeders. They would never cross. It’s adds nothing to the breed. Dog breeding shouldn’t be a supply and demand business. It is at the moment. Too many people are selfish and want a cute puppy like Mrs X down the road has. They don’t care about exactly where it has come from as long as they can have what they want and have it now.
It takes a long time to find the right puppy if you do it properly. People CBA

Dextrodependant · 07/02/2019 18:21

I have an American Bull Collie? A border bull dog? An American Border?

He's just a mongrel really. A rescue dog. American bulldog crossed with a border collie.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 07/02/2019 18:23

I have a rescue dog who was kept in a shed and just brought out to stud bitches, he is a KC registered Parsons Terrier. He had a horrific life as a pedigree until RSPCA stepped in.

I also have a Poodle cross ( Cockapoo ) who parents are KC registered my pup was health checked and not bred in a puppy farm and was well loved before she came to us.

I'm just happy to love our two dogs and have them in our lives.

The folk who bought pedigree parson terriers that our dog sired would never know what abuse he suffered in the breeding of the pedigree line.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 07/02/2019 18:32

LaBelleSausage you are not the type of puppy slave that I rant about. Your breeders are clearly responsible, you k ow what you are doing, all sides are behaving well and the puppies AND THEIR MUM are well cared for.
I have a problem with someone who wants a cockersprockerdoodlerussell because they are the latest 'thing'and sources one through Facebook/Gumtree/Petsathome.
They pop along to see the puppies 'at home with mum'. They live in a normal house, the puppies are gorgeous (have you ever seen a puppy who is not)? They can have the puppy in 3 weeks, a deposit changes hands, the puppy 3 weeks later.
The mum is then sent back to the the breeding stables again. Impregnated again - perhaps with the newest desirable breed, and her misery just goes on and on.
The last bitch i was supposed to rehome came home with me. Her belly dragged on the floor. She never wanted to go for a walk, she never wanted fuss. She laid in the corner of my kitchen, was dragged out for a short walk twice a day, and ended her days contentedly. She was never a pet dog. She would flinch if one of us shouted amd would actually leave the room if we dared to have a row in her presence. She was a sad, sad, damaged little girl. I have always had labs/retrievers. I am a bigger breed lover. She was a maltipoo. She was so small we feared treading on her.

Im sorry, this has turned into an essay. No one ever sets out to buy a dog from a puppy farm. No one. I know that. But sometimes the desire for a particular breed can blind us to how they actually get there.
As I said earlier, i have a cross, a mongrel, she is fab. I know WHO she is. Just always know, know not assume, who your dog is.

And breathe 😁

Booboostwo · 07/02/2019 19:10

Griffon x Husky a bizarre pairing that works, at least in this one, wonderful speciment! He is a rescue, whatever you say I am not paying thousands for a cross-breed.

This is mine she's a Yorkshire terrier x chihuahua ( definitely more Yorkie) I didn't buy her from a puppy farm or a byb, she came from a loving home.

LMFAO! This is an incendiary post on this thread! If you haven't waited 127 years on a 'top breeder' waiting list or adopted then your going to get flamed!! I'm the now 'proud'owner of pedigree dogs, having previously owned the unthinkable mix of a rottie/staff/lab heinz variety mongrel! She was the best, healthiest, most sociable dog ever, her only fault was that she was unique...and therefore irreplaceable. ❤️

Toooldtobearsed2 · 07/02/2019 19:57

TopDogs2019 you are reading a different thread to me then......
I have a pedigree, a mixed, and have had a mixture of the two for donkeys years. No snobbery here, just that I have experienced the hidden side of puppy farming, and if me jumping on a thread to ask people to be sure, really sure where their pup is really coming from makes you laugh your fucking arse off, then you have a fucking sick sense of humour.
I'll bow out now, enjoy your pups, just bear my little lady in mind when you go to view 😊

Ylvamoon · 07/02/2019 21:51

I've been reading x breed threads for a while... And I think there is a big shift in dog breeding: creating a medium to large companion dog.
I think that many conventional breeds are not fit for a modern lifestyle. Think about it: spaniel , collie, shepard, terrier, greyhound & Co have been selected to do a specific job. This selection has been going on for a good few 100 years (in most breeds).
I would say 70% of pedigrees dogs are not fit for modern lifestyle like living in a flat or being left 5 + hours for work commitments. Being able to cope with a 10 min walk around the block on a lead. And than add all the health issues solely created by high inbreeding.
I think the popularity of cross breeding is a result of exactly that!
Now I think it is totally acceptable to take dogs and start selecting and creating a new breed that also serves a purpose. This time it's not about hunting, protection or farm work it's about companionship and fitting in with our modern lifestyle.
