We're thinking of getting another mixed breed dog. We already have a Chorkie and like the look of labradoodles or cockapoos. What's everyone got?

There are plenty of non reputable breeders of pure bred dogs too.

Do your research OP, don't buy ANY dog from a puppy farm.

@Wolfiefan

That's really unfair and wrong. You don't like cross breeds with made up names - fair enough.

Who says they don't exist? The kennel club? because they are the law and moral compass of the canine world? Because everything they do for breed standards is good, right?

I abhor puppy farms, backyard breeders and the like, however cross breeds with made up names aren't the sole reason for their existence.

Every person, if rescue isn't an option should research their breeder throughly. There are crooks breeding pedigree greyhounds out there too!

I have a kc reg labrador and a cross breed. My cross breed is half kc lab and half kc gr, bred as an assistance dog.
I have a labrador and a mongrel, or cross breed, or whatever the pc word is these days. I do NOT have a pedigree labragoldie, or whatever the name would be.

And yes, I do know that things evolve and develop, but what in the olden days (!) Wpuld have been seen as a mongrel/heinz/cross breed, is now a 'designer dog' and people are making thoisands from breeding dogs when they have NO idea on how to actually do it ethically, or to advance the breed - i actually applaud the reasoning behind my ddog2 breeding, but it was done by someone with years of experience, with the best damme and sire. It was not done to create a saleable cutie.

Fwiw, my ddog2 is with me because she failed her exams as an assistance dog. Nevertheless, she is the cleverest dog I have ever met.

If you want a cross breed, go to kennels for them, or at the very least to recognised breeders (and I am not overly impressed by KC recommendations).

I love mongrels, they are the absolute best😁

There are lots of reputable breeders of poodle crosses out there.

You will have to spend good money because that's what you have to do to buy a well bred dog, that goes for any 'breed' doesn't it?

As for the designer dog bollocks - all dogs were bred and adapted and adapted to suit the job or skill it was supposed to do...

Poodle mixes have been around since 1950's.

@PositivePeach there are lots of rubbish breeders of pedigrees. Loads.
Chorkies and cavachons are not a breed. There are no standards and no regulation at all. (Not that the KC does a great job on that by any means!) But if you have a decent pedigree dog why would you deliberately breed mixed pups? Money is the only possible reason.
Decent breeders care deeply about the breed they produce. They breed rarely and invest untold time and energy into producing the next generation and trying to better the breed. There are very very few of them.
Get a pedigree or rescue.

Wolfiefan you need to lighten up a bit.

There are breeders of poodle crosses that care about their dogs, puppies, and raise them just as well as a kc reg breeder. It’s not all puppy farming and backyard breeding- that’s a narrow minded viewpoint.

What about the years of breeding all the current popular breeds to keep in line with the ‘kennel club standard’ that has resulted in lots of breathing and other health problems for some pedigree dogs?

It’s not so cut and dry. If someone loves their dog and wishes to breed them responsibly and with care, live and let live.

Ps and if people want to make up a daft name like ’Schnoodle’ etc, where’s the harm? Again, I detest BY breeding and puppy farming, but silly made up names don’t necessarily equate bad breeding.

Schnoodle? You mean MONGREL! Grin

The snobbery over dogs on MN is laughable.

This is our boy. We rescued him, so not sure of his breed, but the shelter said he was a lab collie cross. It’s no odds to us, we love him.

This guy is 3/4 Border Collie and 1/4 Chow Chow. He's got all the neurotic traits of the Border Collie without any of the intelligence... Not particularly a mix that I'd recommend, but he's a lovely dog.

Sprockers seem to be acceptable on MN.

But Sprockers have been bred as working dogs for years - they are bred for a purpose. Schnoodles or whatever are bred to look cute and make money. If you want a low-shedding dog, why not just get a poodle or a schnauzer?

Our lab X english springer.
They seem to be reasonably popular with gun dog people at the moment which is why she was bred, parents are both champions and her siblings are all working dogs. She was the runt, and is a bit of an idiot so is a pet instead.
She has such a lovely gentle nature but I’m not sure we’d get another who was the same cross type as we’ve been so lucky with her and I doubt they would be the same

HowlsMovingBungalow for me, it is not snobbery, it is, perhaps, a slanted point of view, but I was involved in rehoming bitches from puppy farms a couple of years ago. They were breeding to demand. If the current craze was for jackapoos, they bred jackapoos. The ads were fab - family bred, just one litter, mum and dad can be seen, only £700 each.
The reality was a run down stable yard, with dogs of all breeds, continuiosly impregnated to generate income.
I AM CATEGORICALLY not saying that wherever you sourced your puppy from was like this, but did you just turn up, pay and go? Most well bred dogs, you would be (virtually) interviewed, might have to go on a waiting list, and would go through a process.

I dont volunteer with the rehoming group anymore. I just could not get the look of despair in the eyes of those poor over whelped dogs out of my mind.

Its like everything. A little bit of meddling is a good thing, it brings advancement. A lot of meedling breeds misery

A btw, i am no fan of the kc.

Apologies for this rant to anyone who has definitely sourced their puppy ethically, unfortuneately, a lot of people dont.

I won’t “lighten up” where animal welfare is concerned. Bitches often have far too many litters. The sire isn’t selected anywhere near carefully enough. Health tests aren’t done.
Sprockers are different as they are bred to do particular jobs.

I'd loved to know how many people on MN who have bought spocker pups after being on a list... usually they are bought from farmers or gameskeepers ( not breeders ) - are they in a different category now?

Meet Ernie. Had his dna checked as I was curious about what he was. He’s border terrier crossed with a poodle, with lakela d terrier, wheaten terrier and spaniel in there too. Grin so a good old fashioned mongrel

Cockapoos were originally bred as assistance dogs. Just saying. And yes it is possible to get well bred and health tested cross breeds.

Wolfiefan yes sometimes! But not always. It’s not black and white. And preaching at others on the internet when you don’t know the exact background isn’t necessary.

That is heartbreaking about overbred bitches and of course wrong. But that doesn’t happen in every case of a poodle cross. There are so many bad breeders of pedigree dogs too.

@Tooold

I totally agree with you, I posted a few weeks back on MN that a relative had bought a puppy farmed dog, it made me implode with rage because we had spent months telling them to research and find a kennel and visit beforehand to discuss buying a pup.

They didn't.

I understand the horrors of puppyfarming.
