Did you get them groomed when young? Our boy is 10 months and I've never had him trimmed as normally seen King Charles cavs with quite long fur.. but he does look a mess!

They’re traditionally supposed to be left as they are, not clipped - not even trimmed. It means brushing her every day but mine is kept long, ears and all. I do trim around her back end and bath her every month or so but that’s it :) I think it’s just personal preference as a lot I’ve met have been clipped all over.

We do get ours clipped but she seems to be quite curly. Also she hates being brushed but loves to rub her ears outside. She gets hot in the summer too. She also has hairy foot pads and these get knotted but would be tricky to comb. We don't have her cut really short though. You can ask for just a trim.

How often do you groom him yourself? A Cavalier coat is not difficult to deal with - pay particular attention behind ears and elbows.

'Professional grooming' will probably mean he ends up clipped, which ruins the glossy flowing coat entirely.

We just brush him. Occasionally if he gets something tangled in his fur (seeds and things can be a nightmare in summer) I'll cut it out. We also trim the hair between his toes.

Our book on cavs says they need to go to groomers to trim between their foot pads or something but I can’t remember exactly what it said and we have zero experience still!

Trimming the footpads is easy to do yourself. We just ask him to lie on his back and use normal scissors!
