Help me prepare for my new puppy 😊

Hi all

Collecting new puppy in 3 weeks! So very excited.
We will be crate training him but after some advice re the crate set up.

Should I use vet bed or a propper dog bed? Our last dog had a propper bed from day 1 but he wasn't a chewer, whereas this puppy could well turn out to be.

What kind of bed have you used in the crate?
I know it's probably just my perception but vet bed doesn't look comfy and snuggly enough for a puppy

We bought the crate beds from Argos that fit the crates.
They are waterproof so wipe clean after any accidents and tough material so hard to chew.

Now she has a duvet on top of the crate bed.
But to begin with just blankets as they have so many accidents it’s easy to wash and tumble a blanket and wipe clean the crate bed.

Our slept on a snuggly cushion with a nice blanket.

My advice, buy gin. Lots of gin. Puppies are gorgeous but little bitey gits!! Thankfully madmutt is coming out of her shark phase and is now a full on tantruming toddler!

Mine has a Fleecy washable dog bed, with puppy pad at the front. He's like a mini Hoover, a bundle of energy but likes lots of naps, they bring a lot of joy though worth the hard work in the puppy days. Enjoy !

I bought a grey furry cat bed from Aldi. Puppy has loved it in his crate from day one. Now tends to lie on top of it rather than inside as she's grown quite a bit!

A nice quilt for them to snuggle under would be a worthy addition.
Pups don't have much of a coat when young. Esp for nighttime

We had a bed in a crate which was in an enclosed pen with loads of newspaper on the floor. So puppy could come out and do it’s business without spoiling his bed. Be prepared for the nipping/bitey stage and also don’t be surprised if they aren’t keen about going out for walks very early on. Good luck they are hard work but totally worth it.

I know what you mean but puppies can get comfy just about anywhere. They are so bendy and young they don't need much - they just fall asleep where they stand. You can always add a few old towels or little fleecy blanket.

Until they are past the teething stage I wouldn't put anything too fluffy or expensive in with them. As PP said they will be comfy anyway. I also got a waterproof bed from argos in case of any accidents. A year and a half later it is in his shed for times that he is outside and washes so easily.

We got a small crate to begin with, because if they are in a big one they can do their business at one end and sleep at the other. Our fella was a bit more confined and only once had an accident in his crate, and we blame ourselves as we had given him a few chips the night before and his tummy didn't agree with them at such a young age!!

Have loads of chew toys, kongs for if you are leaving them for a bit (fill them, close with peanut butter and as they get older freeze them too) and treats ready for training (my fella loves the lidl frankfurters - got them at training class and he will do anything for a slice of one you get about 10 chunks from each frankfurter). 10 mins training a day when they are young will do them the world of good, especially when they cant be walked for long anyway (5mins per month twice a day).

Oh having a puppy is so exciting, even when they are bold!! Enjoy it, it wont be long until he/she is all grown up!!

I used a cheap thin single duvet with no cover as it washed and tumble dried quickly after the inevitable accidents. Think it was boring enough he didn't chew unlike the expensive bed we tried before that.
