Two normally placid lurchers had a terrible fight :(

Evening all, i’ve just got back from ferrying DC’s around, my two greyhound cross girls have had a massive fight. They are 4&3 and have lived together with us for 3 years.
My neighbour (family member so has access to our house) heard them and came in to find the older one crying with a nasty graze down her side and a puncture wound on her leg. I have cleaned her up and she is a bit sad but doing ok after a snuggle from me!
They get on well mostly, they are both quite aloof with each other as lurchers are, they don’t snuggle or anything, aside from the usual bitey head game at walk time they get on fine.
Do you think i should get them checked by the vet in case it’s something underlying?

With dogs, when males fight, it's more likely to be all noise and show with little damage.

When females fight it is more lilely to end in serious injury or death.

I'd have them vet checked for sure. I think I'd also be putting a physical barrier in place to keep them apart when left alone (crate, baby gate, door etc).

That's so sad, I don't have that breed but can't imagine mine ever fighting. I'd be heartbroken 😢

Thank you both, I can’t believe it, because i didn’t witness it i can’t be certain of the main protagonist. They both wind each other up but not to this level, always playfully. I will ring the vet first thing and get them both checked :(

Sorry no advice, it's really upsetting though when they fight. Our two greyhound girls had a run in with each other when they came to live with us and the older one ended up with a cut on her face. I'd definitely get them checked out by the vet and keep an eye on their behaviour around each other.

We have 3 huskies, we get an occasional (annual) fight as the dog at the bottom of the pack gets put in his place.

Definitely get them checked at the vet. Are they both spayed?
I would keep a close eye as bitches are known to hold a grudge I’m afraid. Is there a way of setting up a camera while you’re out of the house?

Yes both speyed, i only work mornings and i can leave them with my family who live next door. One of them can open doors but i’ll move the baby gate to separate them in the morning and over night. I’m gutted 😕

Definitely separate them. As someone else said - the saying is dogs fight to breed and bitches fight to breathe. Good luck with it, it’s no fun having to keep dogs separate.

My sister has sibling brother and sister who are now 16 and they’ve had two or three nasty fights over the years , all witnessed and all caused by nothing more than one of them just one of them looking at the other one the wrong way . We’ve never separated them because it’s been so random and straight after they are snuggling up together and they are generally a devoted pair . On one occasion they both needed the vet for cuts and on another my sister got bitten separating them but at least that saved a vets bill . When they did go to the vets with the cuts he couldn’t shed any light on the issue .
