Nighttime Poopageddon

Advice please. Saffypup is doing well in every respect. Is happy and lively and pretty well behaved. But at 12 weeks although his bladder is pretty well covered trolled at night, his bowels aren't. Fifty per cent of mornings we come down to one of two sloppy poos on the kitchen floor - if the type we wouldn't have been able to prevent (or get to) even if we'd heard him. Advice? He's well, not sick, piling on weight. But his poos are too sloppy to control

If he’s had a vet check to make sure he doesn’t have a gut infection I’d suggest changing his food - what is he fed on?

Ps he's a Golden retriever and is being fed Royal canin puppy - dry kibble and wet pouches

Oh and his daytime poos are sometimes firm and sometimes hard. TMI eh?

Has he been to the vet for his vaccinations yet? If not you could ask them while you’re there.

His third vaccination is next week. But he has puppy class this Thursday so i can ask the nurse then

Hi! We have had various soft poop problems, pringlepup is now 15 weeks old. We found kibble and anything beef related made it worse (cow pat worse) and we finally settled on wainwright’s turkey which is 75% turkey 5% rice and the rest is minerals. Also adding in a spoonful of puréed pumpkin seems to help (can buy in tins - 100% pure pumpkin no sugar etc).

We also reduced his daily feed amount and that has also helped.

Worth noting that some dogs can’t cope with grains so grain free might be an option for you? My puppy trainer said puppies tummies are very sensitive and often have to try a few types of food before finding one that suits.

But obvs worth checking with vet to make sure no infections etc x

We have a 5 month old golden retriever pup and had exactly the same issue! We tried a couple of different dry foods and now feed him eukanuba large breed puppy.. he loves it and the problem was fixed within a couple of days, no more sloppy poops and he seems happier. Also its not too expensive and we can order it on amazon so easier for us too! It is also balanced to prevent him from growing too fast. Large breeds such as retrievers should be specifically fed large breed puppy food for this reason. If they have too much calcium in their diet then they are at risk of developing bone and joint problems later in life from growing too rapidly.

If his bowels are firm in the day and sloppy at night I would be wondering if it is possibly the result of stress at being left alone at night?

Thanks all! What you've described is very similar - he is capable of firm poos in the daytime. But they get sloppier towards evening.
Am going to order a small Eukanuba bag and if that doesn't work a small wainwright.
Poor little pup. He's done so well apart from this, which can't be pleasant for him either

Try Orijen. It is much much better that RC. My Labrador is thriving on it.

So did those of you who switched do it gradually? And if so how gradually?

Wainwright grain free with turkey and vegetable. They do a wet food too but might be worth getting one without rice as my goldie bear couldn't cope with that and it was sloppy poos galore till we worked out it was the rice that didn't agree with him

Poopy Pup is now in RC Gastro at the vets suggestion, and things have formed up. Thank goodness. Still waking at 5am for a wee, but I can cope with that. I have it down to a fine art, stepping into wellies in my pjs and out the door and back to bed within 3 mins!

We started out lab on Eden food which so resulted in sloppy poos, switched to millies wolfheart riverside and instantly better, but still soft.

Switched to millies wolfheart countryside and the change was amazing, no more smelly wind or loose poo. Think he doesn't agree with some fish.

It is a case of trial and error, but I'd go grain free, stop the wet food, and no other treats (use kibble for training) until he has firmed up. Also make sure you aren't over feeding or feeding too late at night.
