Our beautiful old boy is in end-stage kidney failure. He's nearly 16 and his kidneys haven't been great for a while, but he's completely lost his appetite over the past couple of weeks, lost a load of weight and is now very sleepy and lethargic. The vet has given him an anti-nausea jab this morning to try and get him eating, because he's burning his own body tissue and that's putting even more strain on his kidneys, but if that doesn't work (and she didn't seem hugely optimistic) we will have to let him go tomorrow.

I'm absolutely devastated - we lost my lovely dad just before Christmas so the timing of this is just awful. Archie has been my soul dog since the day he came home as a terrified rescue 15 years ago. He's with me all day - I work from home on my own because of long-term health issues and he's been the only thing getting me out of the house and keeping me company all day. He's just been the most wonderful character - the gentlest soul I've ever met, and absolutely wonderful with our DS and his friends. We've never been apart, he's come on every holiday with us, slept beside us every night, and got me through the loss of my mum, our other beloved dog and now my dad. I can't imagine life without him. I can't not have a dog, but I can't imagine being with another dog that's not Archie. This time last week I was getting ready for my dad's funeral, and now I'm facing saying goodbye to my beautiful boy tomorrow and it's breaking my heart.

Oh I’m so sorry. He sounds wonderful. We have an elderly rescue lurcher so I know how much these dogs touch your heart.

It sounds like you gave him a comfortable and dignified end x

whateveryousay · 11/01/2019 21:31

I am so very sorry for your loss. What a beautiful boy xx

MawkishTwaddle · 11/01/2019 21:54

Sorry for your loss. You posted on my thread about my boy, and your words were a real comfort.

Our boys will be waiting for us over the rainbow bridge. I can already see my boy running towards me, ears and tongue flapping in the wind, tail high.

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was a beautiful dog and you were both lucky to have found each other. This is the part of human & dog relationships that we all dread, but it seems he had the best possible end of life. Thanks

stayathomegardener · 11/01/2019 22:38

Thanks🐾❤️

No words will help at the moment, there's no pain quite like it. Thinking of you.

RickOShay · 11/01/2019 22:45

Dear God. How sad. God bless your lovely dog. You did something so right for him to live to such a ripe old age .
Sorry for you all x

Starlighting888 · 11/01/2019 23:00

Your heart will be broken (and mend).

What a lovely life and how loved he has been. Try to remember he isn’t in pain, but running in the golden fields and over the rainbow bridge xx

Iwantdaffodils · 12/01/2019 10:09

I'm sorry. He was much loved and knew it, and had the peaceful death he deserved.

spiderlight · 12/01/2019 14:08

Thank you all. I've never known heartbreak quite like this. Have spent this morning clearing out bags and bags of stuff from under our bed so that all his beds can go under there - I can't bear to see empty beds all over the place but I need them close by as well. I'm hoping he will send us another lost soul to love, but not quite yet. I keep thinking I can hear his collar or the click of his claws on the hall floor :( We've been on red alert for months because he needed help to get up and down the stairs (fortunately we had never quite got round to taking down the baby gates even though the baby has just started senior school!) and part of me is still listening out for him in case he needs to be lifted. He used to make us laugh when he was being carried up ad down the stairs because he'd still move his legs as if he was walking

Slightlycoddled · 12/01/2019 14:23

Your late father and your lovely dog look so good together. That's such a beautiful photograph X

Don't forget to take care of yourself op.

Starlighting888 · 12/01/2019 14:29

It is like loosing a member of your immediate family. An old neighbor of mine told me she grieved more for her dog than husband (who she truly loved as well). They will be together having a walk on those golden fields looking down on you all x

Anyone that I known who has lost a dog has found there heart has been mended by a new one (when you are ready).

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/01/2019 15:19

I’ve never seen my husband cry like he did when we lost our old boy four years ago, even when his parents died. The love you have for a dog is different and it hurts when there’s nothing more you can do for them. Well except that one last kindness, which is more than dh’s poor parents got.

Our boy’s ashes are in a drawer next to my dh’s side of the bed. He always did like mooching on upstairs and having a snooze on our bed, little monkey.
