How is your dog with visiting dogs ?

Hi all, any advice please?

We had overnight visitors on Christmas Day, who, as arranged, brought their 7 year old dog Viszler with them.

Our 9 month old lab puppy did not like it at all.
Didn’t want him sit on any sofas, barked at him constantly, chased & agitated the whole time.

It was a complete nightmare.

We did our best to separate, keep him calm, occupy him, but our puppy was just incredibly unsettled the whole time.

Visiting dog much older & calmer, wasn’t bothered, was very chilled out, just didn’t want to spend time with the puppy.

Obviously, lesson learned for us; we thought it would be fine and it wasn’t.

If there is to ever be a next time (maybe not?) how should we prepare?

Your dog needs more socialisation

For reference, I have two toy breed dogs who very rarely meet other dogs these days because of where we are/the times /places they are walked - we recently had my sisters puppy to stay for two days and there was no issue
My dogs accepted him into the house like an old friend and a lot of fun was had by all three of them

This is because for the first 2 years of my dogs lives they met as many other dogs as possible, played and interacted with all kinds of breeds and learnt how to behave around other dogs - they are well socialised and well behaved with no anxiety around other dogs or people

Meant to add that my dogs had never met this puppy before

Zena - yes, sounds about right.

We don’t have nearby friends with dogs; how do you go about socialising dogs?

Parks, puppy parties at vets, training classes, Doggie daycare

Thanks everyone else, for your posts & experiences too. I realise we were naive.

Ddog seemed back to normal as soon as visitor had left, but don’t want the same experience again so I will take steps to prepare him / help him gain confidence.

Thanks all.

My dogs gets all his 'doggy socialisation' from dog walker/day care and training such as agility.

I don't let him socialise with strange dogs when out walking because he isn't interested in them as we are playing ball but more importantly I have no idea of how 'nice' or not strange dogs are.

We tend to walk in the same places a few times a week so we meet the same dogs.
We also did puppy training, good citizen and ringcraft/socialisation.
