Our old dog died today at home advice please

Hi
Our family dog of 14 died around 45 mins after the clock struck 12 so just see the new year in. Came home to find out from my mum he passed just before we got home Sad

He had been detriorating in himself very quickly and we were preparing to take him to the vets in the new year to pts as this was the kindest thing for him. Just had to let other family at home digest it and mum to come to terms/understand as she has mental health probs.

Feel so sad to come home to this, though i know we were preparing to have him pts its a shock still in a way. I know this way is probably best as he was at home.

Not meaning to be crude im wondering what do we do with him tommorow as i dont think there are any vets/ services open to come and collect him tommorow as its new years? we would of had him cremated that was the plan ,when being pts.

I think our only option would be to bury him in the morning . I know mum is not keen on the idea but shes having difficulty processing so cant judge. Think she is in shock. Another family member wont find out till they get up tommorow morning Sad

There should be an emergency vet which can help out of hours. I’m so sorry for your loss

Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply it means a lot espically at this time of morning. I will have to google emergency vets and see if they can come out as we dont have a car . X

one part of me is relieved he went at home peacefuly (i hope) and not with us having to take him to be pts (though i know its the kindest thing) . We had our other dog pts earlier in 2018 and it broke me. I was dreading doing it again.

The other half is heartbroken and so sad didnt say goodbye to him Sad x

Losing a pet is always devastating, you are in shock now. Google emergency vet and your postcode, there is always one open 24/7. They will tell you what to do. If you need support I’m here, I went through this loss two years ago, finally accepted a new dog into my life a month ago. Never underestimate the feeling of grief from a pets death

So sorry this has happened. Just be aware that your dogs body will start to leak fluids before long, if not already. Be prepared..... (It happened to our cat and I wasn't prepared!).

Some pet crematoriums will collect your pet from home. You could try contacting them directly.

Thankyou for the info catbot i did read that on google he is wrapped in a sheet in case of that and has his favorite blanket under him . That came up when trying to google services for this situation it was mostly u.s based pages/services but had some bit of useful advice. You are right at least it was familar for him. X

Ok i will try to find some closer by i know the one we had our other dear dog cremated at is some way away. Hopefuly i can find one open tommorow. Im not sure if they are something thats open all year round xx

So sorry for you and your family.

You could always call the one you used before and ask for advice. They may be able to suggest somewhere closer that is open.

So sorry. I wish our old boy had had the chance to pass away peacefully in his bed at home though. We rushed him to the vet thinking they’d give him some more drugs and they just said it was time to let him go. It happened there and then on the metal table in the cold vets room. And then we had to go home without him. I know you’re all sad that you didn’t say goodbye but honestly, he died in his sleep in his bed at home all curled up and warm and safe. It’s a lovely way for any much loved dog to go. I would concentrate on that bit and remember him the way he was. Flowers

Sorry i didnt come back to the thread sooner.

After phoning round new years day and only finding one very unsympathetic service to pick him up and being told he would not be dealt with for a least a few day as the crematoriums were closed we made the descision as a family to bury him.

We didnt want him left in limbo and also delayed coming back to us. We have a ornament in the garden we picked out for him where he is and will make a little memorial spot with plants and flowers.

I feel thats helped with feeling calmer about things. I am doing a lot better now the initial shock has worn off. I felt guilty we had been out when he passed away.
He was at home though and not going through stress of the vets so thats the main thing.

I am doing better now i still feel sad and its strange waking up to a house with no dogs. Have had a few wobbles/been a bit more emotional than usual, but feeling more accepting of things. I think that he fact he declined over a period of time gave me time to prepare for him passing.
I also didnt expect him to stay around too long when his friend, our other dog, had to be pts. They were inseperable.

You are right , he was at home which is better than the alternative (though if it had been needed was the kindest thing). I was just feeling guilty for being out instead of being with him in his final hours.

I feel more peaceful about things now. Hes at rest now instead of struggling and missing his little friend .
