Dog vomiting after worming tablet.

Today, I gave my nearly 2 year old girl her worming tablet. I try and treat her every month but sometimes it’s every 2-3. Never had an issue before. I usually order tablets from the vets but as my car has gone wrong I ordered some online. They were from the vets uk website and it was their own make worming tablet. Seemed legit.

I gave her the tablet at 12 noon, was in all afternoon with her until 4 when I went out until 7pm. I’ve come home and she’s vomited over the house including my sons fresh bed sheets!! (She even knows she’s not allowed on the beds).

Anyway, it had been at least 4 hours since taking the tablet! Would it of worked?

Is it common to get sick after a worming tablet.

She seems absolutely fine now!

Mine sometimes vomits after his drontal tablet that we give every 6 months.

I think it depends on how long after they vomit on whether they need to take it again. Could you phone your vets as I am sure they will advise even though you bought the tablets elsewhere.

What worming tables are you usually using.

Most worming tablets shouldn't - Drontal certainly shouldn't, except in certain circumstances - be given more frequently than every three months in a dog of your dog's age and depending on risk can be given less frequently.

There is a company that will test your dog's worm load - has to be done by their laboratory - and if there is no sign of worms it's really not necessary to treat them.

Ordered online with a prescription? I wouldn’t give anything not prescribed.

Yes, meant to add, I don't think it's unusual for dogs to vomit after taking worming pills.

She usually has Drontal or millebax (unsure on spelling) but these were from vets uk online which seems like a okay site. I usually order from vets but my nearest vets is 8 miles away and car is currently being fixed. I realised it had been 3 months since I last wormed so thought I’d best get some ordered!

So no prescription? I wouldn’t use OTC flea or worming. Was it 3 months?

Like I said, I normally get a prescription from the vets but I didn’t fancy walking 8 miles to get some... I live in the middle of nowhere. I’ve always stayed clear of Bob Martin etc. I would never use them.

You can actually buy wormers like drontal without a prescription anyway!

Different wormers target different things so I personally wouldn't randomly just buy a wormer unless you know what you need.

For example I use nexgard spectra which does certain worms including lung worm monthly but only need drontal every 6 months based on the risk assessed by my vet.

I agree with Bitey. We also have the same advice from our vet and use the same products.

If you are treating every month you are targeting round, tape and lungworms. None of the OTC products do lungworm you need to use milbemax, nectars spectra, advocate or prinovox.

Like I said a few times before, I have always got worming tablets from the vets (weighed her, ordered over the phone, picked up). But this was a one off! Generally we use millebax and advocate. But we have tried Drontal which she usually refuses to swallow 😬

I was advised by my vet to worm monthly because I have children. But sometimes it’s a little longer!

Wish I never asked. I bought some worming tablets online, asked about the sickness and I’m getting lectures on what worming tablet to use! She didn’t actually have any signs of worms! I won’t be buying them again.
