Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

Well she perked up loads after we washed her. Which was pretty gross, turns out she's got a white patch who knew! 🤢 our other dog is tolerating her well but when she cries in the night he lies next to her crate so that's sweet!

She woke up at 2, and I took her straight downstairs for a pee which she did, then back to bed for cuddles and then put back in the crate when asleep- it's how I've done all the puppy house training for all my dogs, they soon learn that any noise in the night means going outside.

However when DH took her out at 7 he didn't stay out there until she'd done something so she pooped in her bed but it's a learning curve, he's never had a puppy so it's all new to him. She's a beauty though!!

One thing I'm struggling with is the size of her! Our other dog was a puppy from rescue too but he was sturdy and stocky and didn't have a problem going outside- she hates the rain, she'd never been on grass until yesterday, she just doesn't like going outside, so I'm not sure if we need to get some puppy pads and take it back a few steps? She just cries and shivers outside

LittleLongDog · 23/12/2018 13:44

This is LittlePup at now 11weeks. Getting bigger but still teeny tiny.

NewYoiker he hates he rain too but will usually eventually go outdoors, even though it means going outside every five minutes until he does.

Coton we have an indoor cat who is just about tolerating the fact there is now a puppy in the house. We’ve used stair gates to make sure she (the cat) can always choose to be separate and we don’t let him up on anything (bed/sofa/etc) so she can always be higher than him. I’d be interested to hear how you get on.

Chesty how did boot camp go?

ChestyNut · 23/12/2018 14:49

Littledog is adorable Smile

First week class was owners only was ok just going through basic info, next week need to take her, tasty treats and her bed!

We went to puppy play today, thought she’d be fine after yesterday’s play fest with friends dog but she was really timid today, jumping at the humans to try to get picked up Hmm
Refused food when we came in and been on my knee asleep since, think it was maybe a bit much!

Chesty looking back I would not take my dog again to any puppy parties. I really don't think it had any benefit.

On the other hand your play session with a trained sensible adult dog I also found was the best as they get to see how to behave as well as having a great time.

ChestyNut · 23/12/2018 17:48

She’s eaten her tea and gone back to sleep!
I just so want her to be ok with other dogs.

Having family around Tommorow, hows everyone managing the jumping up? Drives me crazy!

BiteyShark · 23/12/2018 17:59

Chesty I found it needed to be a balance. You don't want a free for all which intimidates your puppy especially if they are timid. Equally you don't want your puppy to thinks all dogs are friendly and want to meet and play with them.

How was the party managed? Was it a free for all or did they try and limit and manage the interactions?

ChestyNut · 23/12/2018 18:01

Bitey it’s at the place we’re going to boot camp so very managed. Close supervision and time outs Xmas Grin

Ah that sounds better then. At least you have the option of removing ChestyPup if they get overwhelmed.

Hello, reporting in with a 10 week old Border Collie who we've had for a week :) toilet training is going pretty well, only accidents are when we don't notice the signs in time. We are using crate training which is frankly a life saver!

Yesterday we took him to my husband's parents and he had great fun racing around on the lawn and trying to chase their chicken (which we had to put away sharpish!). We have our own cat, rabbits and chicken that he will need to get used to - he is starting to get there with the cat but doesn't understand why the cat doesn't want to play! The cat is a terrible provocateur and leaps over the stair gate to lie on the floor and stare at him. No claws to the nose yet at least.

HalfGreekBitch · 24/12/2018 08:48

We’ve had our black lab Artie for 8 weeks and he’s now 16.5 weeks. It’s def 2 steps foward 1 step back. Seem to go in phases of everything coming together then a new challenging behaviour emerges. It is exhausting, still getting up twice in night to let him up for wees but at least he is telling us so not had accidents for about 3 weeks now. 8-14 weeks were the hardest. Biting lessened around 14 weeks but increased again, i think start of teething. I have gone back to new mum mode and can’t sleep with the anticipation that he might wake up again. My DP sleeps through! I feel your pain OP but just like with babies, I pray this will become a dim and distant memory!

ferretface · 24/12/2018 09:09

What approach are you all using for the nipping? Our pup has a pretty soft/inhibited mouth but obviously still does the little nips, we are saying "Ow" or "No" and then either immediately leaving the room or doing the human statue depending on how naughty the nip was. He isn't too bad with it at the moment though. Worse is his habit of grabbing and tugging on dangling bits of clothes, we are teaching drop it but it's obviously going to take a bit of time as tugging is fun! I don't want to give him tug toys because collies can be mouthy anyway - he does chew and shake his soft toy though so maybe I'd be better off succumbing....

ChestyNut · 25/12/2018 17:32

Merry Christmas fellow puppy owners!

Chestypup is thrilled that Santa came she got a squeaky hippo, some peanut mutter, chews a cracker with a tennis ball ( eaten immediately) joke and hat and a kong squiggly.

Think I’ll have to invest in a toy box, living room looks like pets at home!

First walk tommorow on what would have been my darling boy dogs birthday who died in September. I may have bought Chestypup a cruncheez cow for tommorow to celebrate his birthday Xmas Smile

Merry Christmas puppy owners!

Purple pup has been a bit of a pain today, I think he's picked up on the excitement and has been extra nippy 🙄

He loves his new squeaky gingerbread man though!

I thought I'd add a pic as I don't think I've added one since we brought him home.

purplegoat · 25/12/2018 18:02

Pic didn't attach. Will try again...

Coming on nicely here. He slept from 10-7 on Christmas Eve and it felt like the best present ever. Training is good. His recalls is pretty flawless and he and my older dog are getting on well

Looking forward to 2019 and adventures with my boys

Wolfiefan · 26/12/2018 21:14

Oh wow. That’s one cute pup.
10-7 that’s fab!!

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 26/12/2018 21:20

I know. I'm not sure if it's a one off but it felt marvellous

Wolfiefan · 26/12/2018 21:22

I have set my alarm in the holidays. 8am! And the dog isn’t waking me before that. Yay!!!!
She was different as a pup mind. Grin

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 26/12/2018 21:56

I'd tell you it gets better but mine was nearly 2 when he ate my coffee table. No I'm not exaggerating when I say he ate it. He had to have a scan to make sure the wood hadn't damaged his stomach.
