Wholemeal bread

My 5month old dog just pinched some wholemeal bread crusts.

Is that ok? First time dog owner. Have googled and THINK he should be fine but just checking!

People scatter bread all over my local park (and all manner of food but that’s another story!) and my dog is very food motivated so he always goes bananas at the sight of bread. He spots it a mile off, long before I do and usually manages to snaffle a fair amount before I drag him away. He’s never been ill from it. It’s not bad for them and won’t make him poorly, just make sure he doesn’t get too much of it

Ha! Fair point Lauren! He does also eat disgusting looking stuff from the garden. Soggy bark chippings and mud are a favourite at the moment.

Had a panic as my kids are usually great at making sure they don’t leave stuff available but dd forgot today. Luckily only raw carrot and crusts left.

He had some chocolate in his mouth a couple of weeks ago but I grabbed him and held his mouth open and shook and it came out. A big piece too! Cant believe some of the stuff that’s poisonous to them. If it weren’t for people the silly things would be extinct by now surely!

Absolutely fine. Bread is o.k in moderation for dogs, most love a slice of toast!

For what its worth, my dog ate all our X mas advent calendars last year (but not his doggy chocolate one) and has also eaten a large bakewell tart, a bowl of defrosting mince, scotch eggs, a birthday cake (but only the side he could reach) and much much more.

Obviously large breeds fair better than small breeds but my dog now has a stomach of steel. And is banned from the kitchen.

I thought chocolate was REALLY bad for dogs. Or is it that some dogs react badly but you won’t really know till they have some?

Pup is only a miniature poodle so he might not be as robust! Yours sounds like he’d make it if It came down to survival of the fittest!

Fresh bread is not likely to be a problem but it's worth being aware that mouldy bread can be fatally poisonous to dogs. Not that I expect you have mouldy bread in your cupboards but some compost bins (for e.g.) do...

With chocolate it's the amount of theobromine per body weight that determines how dangerous it is (there are online calculators).

With raisins it's a 'some react and some don't but you don't know who' kind of thing.

Chocolate can be bad in large quantities (depends on weight of the dog - the online chocolate checker is very useful) and cooking chocolate, dark chocolate and cocoa powder are the worst.

I've heard raisins, grapes and onion are also poisonous but I do think it depends on the individual dog. My dog was living on the streets before I got him so nothing seems to affect him! A 5mnth mini poodle will obviously have a more sensitive stomach.

Agree with missbattenburg about mouldy bins though - I've heard some dogs have been ill after licking mould from food bins.

Maybe let dc write a doggy menu and put it up somewhere to help them remember what ddog isn't allowed?

What an excellent diet some of these dogs have!

We make sure we are serving them the best quality dog food. Then they decide to try flip flop and curry.

A friend of a friend’s dog ate a plastic bag. Had to help it on its way back ‘out’ - she hadn’t realised until that point he had even eaten it!

They really are not the cleverest are they!

We have a compost heap at the top of the garden but have put up a fence to keep him away. My kids watched a pet programme on tv and saw a very poorly dog that had eaten mouldy bread. Also some that had eaten grapes and chocolate and were given meds to make them sick. So they know the consequences of those foods!

My childhood ddog ate my entire Easter egg collection, with most of the cardboard boxes.
And a shoe +lace. Dm had to assist in the passing of that.
Pointed out it was actually HER ddog!!

Mine is only a little pug but he has a stomach of steel.

When he was a puppy he started to eat his puppy pads. He’d then poo them out in the night and eat the evidence. Including the poo.

Cat food at MIls house is a favourite.

A used sanitary towel found at the park was a particular highlight.

A bit of Vindaloo at my SILs house. Prepared myself for an awful explosive poo the next morning. Remarkably solid.

Raw chicken at the park. Hasty trip to the vet and an expensive examination. Again, remarkably fine.

Chocolates from my parent’s Christmas tree, including the foil. Now all chocolates on their tree are placed well out of his reach.

I could go on. We feed him lovely food and he eats every last scrap but The list of things he is prepared to eat is endless. I watch him like a hawk constantly but he still manages to find something to eat at any given opportunity. A bit of bread at the park is the least of my concerns!

Most common ingested toxins we deal with

Raisins in all forms mince pies/Christmas cake/Christmas pud/hot cross buns.
Mouldy bread - there is also the double whammy of mouldy hot cross buns.

20 years ago it was all rat bait,

90% of owning a dog is fishing inedible shit out their mouth whilst saying 'omg what did you eat?!' Or the best one you see them chewing. Open their mouth to see what it is.. nothing to be seen close the mouth and walk away and they're chewing again! Magical food hiding beings!

The most annoying one round here is the trail of discarded chicken bones between Tesco and the local schools/college.

I still have the bruises on my thumbnail from that one.

Our dog recently had surgery for eating 27p and an Lego man whilst on a walk. Then when we went to get his stitches out the vet was chatting to me and ddog seized his moment to chew off the vets shoelace and eat it 🤦‍♀️

The best one though was when he stole a bowl of bread dough that was proofing nicely. Sicked it up 20 mins later, his stomach started expanding and he was really wobbly.. off to the vets we go and he banged into the door of the vets so they rushed him through.

Turns out the yeast in the dough had fermented in his stomach and he was drunk he earned himself a place on the wall of shame for that one

You'd probably know by now if this was your dog but some are very intolerant to wheat and it can cause a massive stomach upset but is otherwise safe.

My cocker has eaten all sorts that he shouldn't and I had to get a locking bin because he raids them (even if he's just had his dinner!).

The worst was when my just turned 3yr old daughter snuck downstairs one morning and fed the dogs tea-cakes (raisins) and I had no idea if both dogs had had some, or if just one had eaten it all. They were my most expensive tea-cakes ever as I had two dogs who both had to be made sick (turned out cocker had had about 90%ish of them). I made sure Ddaughter understood that it was because of what she fed them that we had to take them to the vets and leave them there and that the dogs needed medicine to get better. She was distraught at leaving them at the vets, but has never fed them anything again.

My aunt feeds her ddog wholemeal toast with his meals rather than other biscuits. He thrives on it!

I think I win the disgusting prize: mine has a nose for used condoms. Fishing them out of her mouth is really revolting. There is one park near us I avoid. SHould probably feel sorry for those out shagging in the park, but I do wish they'd use the bins!!

I always share the crusts from my toast with my dog!
