Adopting a Border Collie

Hi

Our beloved dog passed away earlier this year and we are now looking to adopt another Border Collie. I've read good and bad reports of Wiccaweys and wonder if anybody has any recent experience of this rescue.

I'm also looking at Border Collie Spot and Valgrays - Again, if anybody has any recent experiences, or other sites that I can look at, other than the well known sites eg Dogs Trust, RSPCA, Battersea etc.

I've never visited a rescue before, and appreciate that I need to be realistic when visiting these centres.

Border Collie Spot and Valgrays are great.

Wiccaweys did have some issues a while back as you mention.

What are you looking for in the rescue?

Ideally, we want a short-haired collie between 1 and 4 that likes cats (We have 2). That’s why I’ve been looking at Wiccaweys as they list whether their dogs are cat friendly or not. We’re not worried whether it’s a boy or girl.

Have a look at Protecting Preloved Border Collies too. We got our rescue from them 4 years ago and they are really helpful and very supportive

I think they are in Wales and they do have a few dogs there but most of their dogs are in foster care all over the country. We are in central Scotland and our rescue was transported up from Slough

I’ve heard very good things about Morgan’s dog rescue in Cumbria. Mainly collies and working dogs.

There's also Border Collie Trust GB in Staffordshire.

Does anyone have experience of the Freedom of Spirit Trust for border collies?

Following on from my original post, I contacted Wiccaweys and was advised that they would arrange a home check. That was about 6 weeks ago, and despite my calling to show that I was still interested, I haven’t heard from them. I know that they are busy, and that I live quite a distance from Lincs, but if they’re unable to help, I wish that they would just say so. I’m just glad that the dog that I was interested in has now found a new home.

Now waiting for a home check from another rescue which is arranged for next week.

Birdie58 because homecheck are done via volunteers it all depends on when Someone is available. I know it's frustrating. But it's an extremely busy time of year which is probably why it's taking so long.
However, we rehomed our boy Mac, 1o years ago from Wiccaweys and he unfortunately passed away in December.
I would but hesitate and rehoming another dog from the.. the support they give is 2nd to none. Obviously it'll all come down to whichever dog you bond with, regardless of which rescue it came from.

If you live out of area of any rescue it is very common to find your own homechecker and then get them approved by the rescue - this is much quicker and is easier for the rescue as they are usually pushed to the limit.

I have had 3 Wiccaweys collies and they have been an absolute delight - one needed some behavioural help which Paul and Sarah gave to me free of charge (I did make a donation!) and he is now a super calm collie.

I am South west but would always contact Wiccs if I wanted to rehome again.

Many thanks for your messages of support - It is just so depressing not to have a dog in your life. This is the 1st time in 25 years that we have been without a dog. I’d be interested to know how/who to contact regarding arranging my own home check if anybody can help.
