I don't own a dog any more but I came across this and thought I'd spread the word. Apologies if this pointing out the obvious but I'd never heard of Xylitol being a problem for dogs.

Most veterinary practices will give you free advice over the phone if you are concerned about anything your dog has eaten. The risks of xylitol along many other common poisons are well known by vets and if caught early the vast majority can be treated successfully. Poisoning by household items are very much part of everyday veterinary practice.
