Dog is poorly - need a hug!

I had my DDog castrated yesterday (on vets advice due to retained testicle). Was told he'd perk up by this morning. He had neither perked nor peed. Rang vet and they said to give him until this afternoon. He is now very very lethargic and still hasn't peed. He ate breakfast this morning but has just declined one of his favorite treats. I am pretty sure he hasn't drunk all day despite my lying him by his water bowl. He looks so sad.

Have an appointment with the vet in 2 hrs. Hoping she can perk him back up. Poor little sausage.

My sympathies My boy didn't cope at all well with being neutered. And being a bendy, long-nosed fellow he was able to get around the cone and lick/bash his wound, giving himself a secondary infection He ended up on tramadol with a massive cone, so he could barely lift his head off the floor and I felt like I'd broken my lovely bouncy pup. It took about three weeks for him to fully recover, but recover he did! Hope your pup gets better soon x

Not had any problems with castrations but at the beginning of the summer my little dog got severely dehydrated and your boy sounds just the same.

We were given the option of taking him home and trying to get fluids into him overnight or leaving him there on a drip. I chose the drip.

He made a complete recovery within 12 hours.

Fingers crossed it is something equally simple for your boy.

Hope the vet has managed to help him and he picks up very soon Cath. It horrible when an animal is unwell you feel so helpless.

The vet said he wasn't dehydrated - he was just being a wuss and not weeing in case it hurt. She shot him up with more painkillers and gave me more painkiller tablets for him and he pee'd in the car park when I put him down to open the car door. He is still very sad this morning and hasn't repeated the weeing but he is moving a tiny bit more and when I carried him out into the garden on an abortive wee attempt he did roll onto his back in the warm grass for me to rub his tummy so there are signs he is perking slightly. He ate a little breakfast and I will keep trying to persuade him to walk more and to wee. Otherwise he'll be back in the vet again!

Big hug from me. DDog here is off her food today, lethargic & won't even be tempted with sausage! (Had a bit then refused). Got to wait till back end of afternoon for vet appt so now I'm stressing that it's something serious even though it's probably not. It's awful when they're poorly

Well if he wants a tummy rub his tummy must be feeling all right.

I suppose dogs are like people, some of them deal with pain better than others. It's must be pretty scary for the dog. He's put to sleep, wakes up feeling groggy and out of control and something hurts badly. Poor little chap.

Hope he continues to improve.

I took him out for lunch. He still won't walk but he enjoyed sitting under the pub table in the sunshine. The waitress gave him a biscuit and he had a drink from their water bowl and got to lick a small child. All in all I think he enjoyed himself. He is flat out under my desk again now. He is seeming to tire easily at the moment. Still no wee today though! Have never been so bothered about someone or something taking a leak!

I know that feeling about the wee, or in my case poo.

My dog has been really ill in the past with pancreatitis so lots of vomiting and bloody poo. She's been doing really well for some time now and I can't tell you how good it feels every time I pick up her nice healthy poo.

Who knew my life would come to this :)

My dog had major spinal surgery 2 and a half weeks ago. He was in hospital for two nights and came out feeling Very Sorry for himself. He would not wee or poo at all and we were back at the specialist vet (an hour’s drive away...) two days later as he hadn’t toileted for 48 hours. Of course, as soon as he got there he did a massive poo and an interminable wee . After getting him home again (with extra pain relief) he was still really reluctant to wee or poo and went for 36 hours with nothing. Gradually over the next week the gaps got shorter and by the weekend he was back to normal and obviously feeling much perkier. Fast forward to today and he’s had his stitches out and a check-up by the specialist who’s really pleased with his recovery.

Some dogs just need a bit of extra time after an operation - I was really worried about my boy but he’s very much on the mend now - and sending virtual licks to your pup

Thank you all. Pup had a very short walk last night and a wee. I got up this morning to find he'd done a giant dump on the back doormat in the night and was feeling much improved. He even dragged me over to the field for a morning walk. He was grumpy it was only a short on lead walk. He is now obviously itching "down there" but is looking a lot perkier. Happy days!

Please to hear he's getting back to his perky self and everything is beginning to function as it should.
