I put my pup to sleep in the kitchen for the first time tonight and it's been 2 hours and she is still barking :(
It's so loud. I'm worried about my neighbours and I can't sleep either!

She can't sleep in my room as my bed is low and she just jumps in it and bites my hair/face, plus my furniture is designed in a way where it juts out and she just tries to chew it all night.

I'm so stressed. Someone please tell me I'm doing the right thing. I feel awful

So how much sleep did you get in the end? Hopefully the rest of the night passed calmly.

Wolfiefan · 19/09/2018 08:08

I’m hoping the OP is still sleeping!

OhLawdy · 19/09/2018 08:10

At 4am she woke up and I took her outside. She takes FOREVER to pee and doesn't get that it's an outside thing yet but she eventually did a wee.

She was SO hyped up. Jumping about and trying to play.

I thought I was gonna be sat with her again next to the crate for ages.

I put her in and she sat down did a little whine then lay down and went to sleep Shock

She woke up a few times but all she did was get up, circle and find a comfy spot. No noise.

At 6am we got up.

Am amazed how well she did.

@OhLawdy - I am so pleased for you (and her).
Sleep deprivation is horrendous

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 19/09/2018 08:33

Yay well done OhLawdy you have been a superstar dealing with this! Your puppy is one lucky puppy to have you as an owner.

You saw there was a problem, were willing to improve things for your puppy - excellent Smile

adaline · 19/09/2018 09:23

Yay! So pleased it was better last night :)

Wolfiefan · 19/09/2018 12:28

You did brilliantly. I’m so pleased for you. I remember the taking an age to pee in the middle of the night thing. Mine now goes when I tell her to! Good luck today.

OhLawdy · 19/09/2018 13:13

I just feel so much better.

She slept. I slept. I knew where she was. That she was safe.
I'm not super tired this morning.

Next step is toileting.

I've read that it doesn't really click until around 12 weeks so she's still got time to go. But I take her out on the lead because she gets distracted by everything.

I have to stay out there until she is whining because she needs to go that bad. She wants to go in the house to do it!!
Then when she does go lots and lots of praise.

Wolfiefan · 19/09/2018 13:21

I’m so glad you feel better.
I had to take mine out on the lead too. If I didn’t she wouldn’t go to the toilet.
There’s a great FB group called dog training advice and support. They have a fact sheet on toilet training. They suggest going out and if pup doesn’t go come in and go out again. You have to watch the buggers like a hawk don’t you!

bpisok · 19/09/2018 14:05

Hi @OhLawdy
Our pups are the same age and it looks like we are ahead on the toilet and sleep fronts but miles and miles behind you on the lead training. The only way she will even let me put a lead on her is if I have pieces of ham in my hand (and even tiny bits give her the squirts). If I don't have any I have to pretty much pin her to the floor and then she refuses to walk. No way could I do that in the middle of the night in the dark. If I have ham, she will let me put the lead on, walk next to me and sits when told so she gets the ham!! As soon as the ham is gone she refuses to walk. Shes allowed out for a walk this weekend but unless I can get her to walk without an entire pig in my pocket I guess we are are still stuck to the kitchen and patio

We stumbled on a way to toilet train almost by accident. She had been trained to go on puppy pad when we got her. I put the puppy pad outside on the patio near the back door and left the door open....and pretty much immediately she started using it. Now it's raining I 'invested' in a giant golf umbrella and put it in the base of what used to hold the parasol. It's a win win situation. She goes outside, she prefers the location to anywhere else because it's dry and because it's on the mat I just have to throw the mat away rather than hose the patio down! She can't go on the grass because we are on a hill and it's too steep for her (and me!)
Now it's cold we have closed the patio door and put hanging bells on the handle. She has sussed that if she rings the bell I open the door which will be useful when we let her out of the kitchen because we will be able to hear her (we have a kitchen dinning room that we are all living in at the moment until she can be totally trusted in the rest of the house). Mind you the first day I was opening, closing, opening closing the door all day with her looking at me like I was deranged (and her not wanting to go out anyway). It took a while for the penny to click but she's using them consistently.

So how did you get pup to accept the lead???

Nesssie · 19/09/2018 16:48

Annndddd welcome to puppyhood!
Where you have the worst night ever and then the best. All dogs are different, you just have to find what is right for yours.

A good tip during the toilet training is to keep repeating a word (mine is 'go busy') whilst waiting for her to toilet. As she learns to toilet train she will associate that command, and it makes toileting easier later on if they can go almost on queue).

werideatdawn · 19/09/2018 17:47

I'm really glad to read that you had a better night. I would also like to apologise for being a snarky bitch yesterday.

adaline · 19/09/2018 17:58

Oh I'm so glad you feel better. I remember being there with sleepless nights and whining pup - it's exhausting!

We found toilet training very easy with ours luckily - we were very consistent - took him outside all the time, used the word "toilet" when he was going/when we wanted him to go, and lots of praise when he did go. We also found not using puppy pads helped - we took him out in the night, even if at the beginning it was 2-3 times, he soon learned night-time was for sleep or toilet, he didn't get to play if he woke up at 2am!

AgathaF · 20/09/2018 09:09

So glad you've had a better night, hope last night was good too.

With toileting, say the word you want the pup to associate with toileting whilst she is weeing/pooing. Don't say it unless she is doing the act otherwise she'll get confused. Keep doing that for a few weeks. We're still doing it now with our 19 week old puppy, but he has been able to wee on that command for a few weeks now. Definitely makes life easier when you're out and about with your dog.

Nesssie · 27/09/2018 16:07

@OhLawdy How's puppy now?

OhLawdy · 27/09/2018 16:39

She's fantastic.

Goes to bed 10pm. Gets in her crate in our room. No fuss. Sleeps till 3am. Out for a pee then back to sleep till 6.30.

No whining at all

She is amazing.

:)

Thanks for asking!
