Ddog having surgery tomorrow - please help me to get a grip

My lovely boy is having surgery tomorrow and I’m feeling very wobbly. He’s had a rubbish year, starting with an infection on his spine which took ages (and ££££) to diagnose, followed by months of antibiotics. The infection has finally gone but he’s been left with a lot of scar tissue and irritation around his sciatic nerve which is causing him a lot of pain.

The vet doing the operation is one of the foremost specialists in this field so I know he’ll be in good hands but I can’t help worrying 😕

Aww, hand hold here. I’m sure he’s in good hands and think how much happier he’ll be afterwards. They’ll keep you up to date with his progress and let you know how he’s getting on. Can you send him in with one of his own blankets and an old top of yours so he’s got familiar smells around him when he wakes up?

It never ceases to amaze me how resilient our pups are- they really are tough as old boots when they need to be. Sounds like he's in safe hands and where he needs to be Flowers. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

Thank you - he’s going to have to be in a crate for two weeks, then four weeks of on-lead walks, no stairs and no jumping but after that he should (frantically crossing everything) be back to his normal, cheerful, active self.

Good idea about blanket/top Smile

Handhold here too. It's awful. My 10YO had surgery a few weeks ago, didn't need crate rest luckily but other consequences which haven't been easy. I hope it all goes smoothly and that you aren't kept worried waiting for news.

Waiting for phone call .... should be between 4 and 5 .... but am staring at the phone willing it to ring at 3:15 ....

Hope it went well, our dog was spayed today, just phoned Vet and they need more time as she is slow in recovery so I’ve got to phone back in an hour to see how she is doing, worrying isn’t it!

Surgery went smoothly - he’s in recovery and being looked after by a very nice nurse. Neurologist doing ward round at 9 tomorrow when they’ll make a decision about when he can come home

Hope he is doing ok? Long recovery from GA for ours, she was crying all night. I slept on the sofa next to her, hopefully better nights sleep tonight.

Ginorchoc my dog is like that after every GA he has. Takes a couple of days each time for him to get back to more his normal self.

He’s staying in another night - he’s doing well - eating, going outside for quick wee walks - but he’s still in pain from the wound site and they want to get on top of that before he comes home. I spoke to the neurologist this evening and barring any setback tonight we should be able to pick him up tomorrow afternoon. He said the nerve was very badly swollen (worse than he thought it was from the MRI) so surgery was definitely the right decision

Spoke to the nurse looking after him today - he’s perked up a lot and is ‘chatting’ to her when she goes past (also getting a bit jealous when she pays attention to any of the other dogs...). He still hasn’t done a poo Shock but he won’t poo when he’s on the lead if he can help it at all ... so they’re going to try taking him out on a longer lead to give him a bit more privacy. But apart from that, he’s on course to come home this afternoon Smile

He’s home Smile. He looks awful, with a very weird haircut and massive scar along his back. He’s eating and resting but is obviously not feeling himself.

I am extremely glad he was crate trained as a puppy as he’s perfectly happy to rest inside the crate and I suspect being comfortable about being crated meant being in the vets was much less stressful for him
