Which dog?

Yes I know it's one of those..

We recently bought our own house in the Peak District and we'd like to expand our family to include another furry. Currently have a 7 year old mutt who dislikes going for walks in the rain but other than that is fine 😂 he's very happy with other dogs.

It's a 3 bed house, I work nights and DH runs his own business so either he takes the dog to work with him or he stays and sleeps in bed with me 🤦‍♀️, we have a dog walker that currently walks our dog for 1-2 hours a day, very reasonable!

We like to go on walks as a 3 of us about 4-5 miles less if it's raining but that's because dog will once off the lead turn round and go home

No plans to have a baby, probably never will to be honest.

So help us choose a breed of dog! Have looked at dogs trust but their dogs all need to be in a dog free home :( we're happy to rehome or get a puppy, but we need to narrow down what we're looking for really :)

A local independent rescue will have a dog that would love to join your family.

Not all Dogs Trust dogs need to be the only dog! Some do, but not all.

However, Many Tears are always looking for people who have an existing emotionally stable dog to take in ex puppy farm breeding dogs and show them the ropes of how to be a dog. It's more Wales and southern based, but I've only ever heard good things about them.

Impossible to decide which breed is suitable for someone else I'm afraid!
Just keep looking on rescue websites until one pops out at you.

Best is to pick a weekend and go and visit some of the larger rescues, or call and make appointments to visit smaller rescues. Most rescues, including ones like Dogs Trust, definitely DO have dogs that go with others, including some that need that as they're a bit insecure. Here's a puppy on the front page of Dogs Trust right now that would actually be best in a home with another dog :)

Not all the dogs a centre has will be online either, some will be taken in and rehomed and never go anywhere near the website.

Give them all a call, go and visit, fill in some rehoming forms :)

Size?
How much grooming are you prepared to do?
How much space do you have?
Time for training?
Some rescues foster (like black retriever x). They might work.

Look at Black Retriever cross rescue on FB, they have some lovely dogs and prefer to rehome with another dog in residence

For both our dogs we were never looking for a particular breed, more just waited until we heard of a suitable dog for us. First one was an accidental litter of a neighbour’s dog, and second was a rescue from Black Retriever X. There were some specific personality traits I wanted in our second dog (things like wanting to play with me, liked long walks/being outdoors, good off-switch, good with vehicles, liked attention etc) and after about 6 months of keeping an eye on Black Retriever X page, I came across a working cocker who ticked all the boxes. Not sure we would have necessarily chosen that breed if buying a pup, but she fits in perfectly, so it’s worth staying open minded.

Hard to say - I think it's dependent on the individuals (dogs and humans).
