First night blues

How do you handle the first night of a pup being away from his group for the first time? My dad has a new pup tonight and is determined to leave the pup in the bed area he'a prepared for him in the kitchen. My Mum wants him to leave all the doors open and allow to pup to have access to them?

What do you all do?

I used a crate and slept in the room next door so I was close when he woke and had a baby monitor so I could see him.

I would never have left my pup to roam around the house freely especially whilst I slept because I didn't want him to pee and poo anywhere plus not all rooms were puppy safe. I also imagine being in a strange house going from room to room trying to find you at night would be more scary.

No way should he have access to the whole house - he'll pee, poo and chew everything!

Best advice I've heard is to put their bed area (crate or bed) in your room at first and slowly move it to where you'd like them to sleep. Remember they're just babies and need comfort and reassurance in the night - plus it helps you get them out for the toilet before they have an accident!

We had ours in a crate and I slept downstairs with him for the first 5 nights. Much easier for all those night-time toilet trips into the garden. Definitely don't give the pup the run of the house. That's just asking for lots of toilet mistakes and not at all fair on the puppy.

In the kitchen in their bed from the word go with a puppy pad near the door.

It’s not likely to be only one night that a new puppy cries for his mum all night.
I had mine in a box beside my bed. I could stroke him and knew when he woke, needing a wee. He never cried, I couldn’t lie in bed listening to a baby pup desperately shouting for his mum for hours.

We got our pup at 8 weeks. At the breeders, I held some of her siblings, with the idea that I would then have their scent on my shirt and leave it in the crate with the puppy at night. We covered the crate at night with a towel and she happily went to sleep and no crying etc. She is now 18 weeks and has never cried in the night. We are very lucky though as I heard from others that their puppy cried from anywhere days to months!

We did put his blankie in with him that smelled of his mum.
