I'm getting a pup. Help me prepare. Advice?

Good evening.

Its 2 weeks till my puppy arrives and I'm getting quite nervous!

I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice?
Or things I need to consider?

Mine was v cuddly I remember that! Take him/her out regularly and reward when does a wee or poo we found we didn't need puppy pads as he got into a routine from the start.We didn't let him sleep upstairs as a personal preference a d we stuck to it so he didn't cry for us as was used to it

Meant take outside into garden I know might be too young for walks yet

I LOVE puppies but fuck a duck, they are hard work. Relentless enthusiasm, endless energy, always trying to do something they shouldn’t be.
You need somewhere you can leave it safely where it’s not going to
a) destroy something,
b) eat something that’s going to kill it

WhatsYourFuckingProblem I think we were v lucky as ours did none of that 😁 he is a tiny Chihuahua though so no damage,phew!

A lot depends on what kind of pup you are getting and where from.

Crate training is a good thing, imo. I was reluctant with my first pup but after he chewed through the phone wires while I slept I looked at it again!

Don't get too bogged down in special toys. I bought a few "challenge" and " stimulating " toys, but dpup preferred to eat cardboard boxes and play with plastic bottles and an old hat of mine!

Look at insurance- look properly!- and make sure you are getting the proper level of cover for your pup and your circumstances.

Register with a vet and get him or her checked over when you first get him/ her., make sure there are no obvious problems.

Depending on breed, look at breed associations. Eg, if you are getting a Siberian Husky you need to join a dog sled club etc etc.

The best advice I can give is to not use puppy pads. Toilet training was a nightmare for my puppy because she learnt it was ok to pee in the house because she’d use pads at night. Nightmare!
Also start recall training ASAP, first in the house then build up to outside and eventually let pup off lead as early as you can, I was scared I wouldn’t be able to catch a fast little run away puppy so didn’t bother but actually I’d have got a puppy
Much quicker than I can now she’s grown up. She can’t be off lead because her recall is shocking it just makes life easier of every once in a while they can come off for w good run in a secure area.

She's a spaniel.

I want her to sleep in my room and not in a crate.
The kitchen will be a safe space for her

And I agree that puppy pads are confusing. I will start with outside training straight away.

I love spaniels they’re such lovely dogs 😍
I have mine in my room, didn’t crate train although at times I wish I had it’s certainly got its benefits.
