Potential puppy farmed 'pure' Daschund

A family friend has, in my opinion, been incredibly foolish.

Having decided she'd like a dachshund puppy, a few short weeks later- she has one. After answering an ad on Gumtree....

When she got the house to view the puppies, the mum wasn't around. The explanation the bloke gave for this was he'd had a few mates round for the World Cup which was disruptive for her so his sister was looking after her for the day Hmm

Anyway, predictably, she fell in love with the puppy, and handed over £900.

Below are pictures of the puppy. So far it seems to have been healthy....but it is NOT a pure Daschund from what I can see (maybe I'm wrong, I'm no sausage excert)

I think I can see Jack Russel in it, anyone see anything else?

I asked her why on earth she went ahead with the end purchase of the puppy when so many things were screaming PUPPY FARM and she said at least she saved it from potentially not a nice life at a puppy farm...which of course is totally stupid but that must be what people think or the whole operation wouldn't keep going!

I would agree he’s a lovely pup, but definitely a mix. Even very young dachshund pups have floppy ears.

Buying a pup off gumtree without seeing mum, why would you do it? It can cause so much heartache, those poor dogs.

Meanderthal · 07/08/2018 16:15

Wow those ears! Super cute dog, looks like he/she is full of character. Agree with others though, theres no way its 100% daschund.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/08/2018 16:28

Sweet little thing, but a Dachshund it’s not.

A DNA test would be very interesting.

liz70 · 07/08/2018 16:33

Reading around, it seems that some dachshund pups ears were sticking up until they were about 5 or 6 months, then flopped over by that age, with the owners insisting they were indeed purebred. So it might be interesting to wait and see if this happens with the OP's friend's dog?

Melamin · 07/08/2018 16:38

The one I had always had floppy ears.

DogInATent · 07/08/2018 16:40

Anyone reckon it will grow into those ears?

Until then, it maybe best to keep it indoors in high winds.

adoggymama · 07/08/2018 16:50

I have 5 pure bred dacshunds and that definitely isn't one. They all have floppy ears straight away. Any paperwork she has cannot be legit. It looks like a dacshund chihuahua cross to me, but very sweet! Not £900 pounds worth though!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 07/08/2018 16:52

Cute but not a pure breed

We paid £900 for BastardPup. He is a pedigree, both parents champions, very reputable breeder. Thought long and hard before buying, visited before pups even conceived. Incidentally the y also breed Dachshunds - no idea what they charge though.

liz70 · 07/08/2018 16:54

Okay, I was clutching at ears straws there. Grin

Rarfy · 07/08/2018 17:03

Not purebred. Face is definitely different. Could be crossed with a jack russel or chiuaha looking at it. Also depending on where in the country it was bought quite cheap for a dachshund.

We have a dachshund. Long nose and floppy ears.

FlotSHAMnJetson · 07/08/2018 17:11

Is it in a wind tunnel?

Canshopwillshop · 07/08/2018 17:15

I love him ❤️ Ain’t no pure breed though 😂

Benjamin99 · 07/08/2018 17:34

£900 was not particularly cheap either! You can get pure bred dacshunds for less than that if you look around. At least he's gone to a good home, he looks very happy!

Cheesesteak · 07/08/2018 18:00

Report it to the RSPCA they do do something. It might not be banging on the door right away but gathering information about these people is invaluable. Especially if there’s fraud regarding paperwork.
Also consider reporting the advert to gumtree. They are incredibly good at taking adverts and profiles down that are linked to suspected puppy farming.

cameltoeflappyflapflap · 07/08/2018 18:05

Definitely not a pure breed but still cute.

Benjamin99 · 07/08/2018 18:20

If he has grown bigger than a mini dacshund he could be crossed with a standard. I have 2 minis and 3 standards. Standards are an awful lot bigger!

HomeOfMyOwn · 07/08/2018 19:40

When is the new law coming in to make it illegal for dealers to sell pups?

Until that law is brought in then the only possible legal breach is selling it as pure mini dachshund when it's not (trading standards) and if income from them hasn't been declared for benefits (if relevant) or tax purposes. Puppy farmers and their dealers are perfectly legal - we are not the nation of animal lovers we are made out to be.

SpottingTheZebras · 07/08/2018 20:06

I wonder how that stands for pet insurance if you claim it is a pedigree and it isn't (although maybe it isn't a problem as pedigree probably makes it dearer).

Interestingly I had a similar conversion with my vet once. I have a huge Maine Coon cat and when I finally managed to get all of him out of his travel box the vet exclaimed “now that actually is a Maine Coon” and I asked him why he was so surprised as it said his breed on the computer in front of him. The vet said they get lots of animals in that are supposed to be certain breeds and are clearly not at all so I asked how that worked in terms of documentation etc and he said that they take the information they are given in good faith. Therefore, as a claim to an insurance company will often go through a vet, I suppose the vet will just fill in the breed they are told rather than what they believe.

userxx · 07/08/2018 20:27

That's no hound....... it's a fruit bat 🦇

psicat · 07/08/2018 22:17

Well... As a crossbreed at least her insurance will be cheaper 🙄

Puppy farm dog, possibly English although lot are being illegally imported now from Ireland and Europe. Hopefully he stays healthy.

She's wasted £900 when could have adopted a lovely pup from a rescue. And supported a horrible business. People can never wait, want a dog and want one NOW rather than putting proper time and research in. Might have to wait a bit longer to get one from a good breeder or rescue but it's a no brainer to me.
But then I see the nasty side of it, the welfare conditions of the parents, the sick puppies and the heartbroken owners who weren't lucky

MsOliphant · 07/08/2018 22:38

Lord....her latest Instagram post says that she's had to 'restart the dog's vaccinations' and get her microchipped!!

That must mean that she literally came away with a mongrel unregistered puppy doesn't it. What an idiot.

OP posts:
AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 07/08/2018 23:24

Isn't it a legal requirement nowadays for the puppy to be microchipped before it is sold?

MrsEricBana · 07/08/2018 23:28

Very cute dog but shame people are being duped like this and even worse shame that puppies are being raised in awful conditions.

psicat · 07/08/2018 23:43

Yes it is a legal requirement for pup to be chipped before sale or at 8 weeks unless vet certifies can't for medical reasons. You can even get miniature chips now for teeny dogs. So huge alarm bells. She can report to trading standards, they probably can't do anything but never know if the Intel could be useful in the bigger picture.
Dog warden in area should deal with unclipped puppies being sold
