A tail (sorry!)of two countries vet fees

Just been to a vet in Spain to get my dogs tapeworm tab before we head back to the U.K.

Tab was 8 euros, which I thought was very reasonable, all documentation completed on his passport.

Noticed their price list, 45 euros for pet passport, including rabies jab. I paid £135 for pet passport/rabies jab in the U.K.

Makes you think.

I deliberately don’t compare. The money we paid to arrange UK/ North America stuff for three dogs is probably still cheaper than 6 months in quarantine. Even with thousands of pounds of shipping fees.

I think vet fees here (UK) are expensive but unless you're planning to move to Spain it's probably not a good idea to compare prices, it'll only make you miserable.

Are wages lower in Spain generally? Maybe that's the reason.

They also differ from one part of the UK to another. I suspect where I live prices are high. It's annoying but not much else to do but pay up and accept it.

It does, as you say, make you think.

I don't compare because food/accommodation/travel/wages/vets etc vary from country to country and it only matters if you live there.

Are you in an expensive part of the UK? It's £90 for passport and rabies vacc here (Midlands).

agedknees · 25/07/2018 20:12

No, we are in Lancashire, so not a expensive area.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but how did you prevent dog hurting his feet in the heat on the pavements?

agedknees · 25/07/2018 21:12

We have been here since April. It takes dogs 3 months to acclimitaze. His paws have become harder, but not sore.

We did not take him out between 12-1500hrs, and utilised shade. Always carried water for him.

It is now too hot for him 40degrees today, so are heading back to cooler climes.

Hate to say it but we appeared to be the only ones carrying water for our dog.

I’m trying to find a vet in france to administer the tapeworm treatment and complete passport etc. for when we go on our holidays next month. I’d no idea what sort of cost to expect, but at my local surgery (Manchester) you don’t get to see the vet for less than £40 before they do or prescribe anything.

MadisonAvenue · 26/07/2018 06:55

Not anything to do with pet passports etc but we always get a vet's prescription for Advocate for our dog. I inquired last time, just out of curiosity, how much it was to buy directly from them and was told £15.07 per dose. With the prescription, which they charge £10 for and can be used twice, I can buy 6 doses online for £24 Shock

agedknees · 26/07/2018 17:59

Beadyboo- our English vet said he had been charged 45 euros for the tapeworm tab in France. He admitted he became all British and didn’t tell the French vet he himself was a vet.

Just out of interest MadisonAvenue I happened to catch a bit of a tv programme called 'Fake Britain' a few days ago.

A woman had contacted them because she suspected that the flea treatment - think it was Frontline - she'd bought online for her cats wasn't working. Turned out the active ingredient that was supposed to kill the fleas wasn't actually present in the product and the whole thing was a scam.

Buying medicines from the vet is always going to be more expensive because they have to use certain products but at least you know that what you're getting is the genuine article and it's going to do what it's mean't to do.

Of course I'm not claiming where you buy your flea treatment from isn't genuine but there are an awful lot of rip off merchants out there. Buying cheap online can sometimes turn out to sometimes not be such a bargain.
