Re-home - massive change in circumstances

Advice please on how best to re-home my beautiful labradoodle. She is superb but unhappy. I experienced a massive change in my personal circumstances and she is being affected by it.

Have you approached any rescue centers?

I wouldn't rehome privately as you have no idea what they are like or ability to vet them and thus you could be rehoming her to a life of misery.

Also what is the change in circumstances and how is it affecting her as someone might be able to suggest things to try which won't mean you rehome her.

The Doodle Trust may be able to help you, either with advice or rehoming.

If you know someone personally or through friends who is looking for your type of dog - rehoming privately can be perfectly fine - you will know where they are going because you will visit and talk to the prospective owners
this private rehoming is SO BAD gets wheeled out every time your situation arises - it is worth a try before you go to the rescue centres

drearydeardre to be fair if OP knew someone like a family member that would take the dog then I wouldn't have thought they would be on here asking how to rehome.

Please go via a rescue. Many will help find a new owner and do Home-to-Home, rather than taking the dog into kennels.

Whereabouts are you? I have just lost my beloved labradoodle (thread in doghouse) and am just starting to look for another adult dog. I have had 3 labradoodles over the last 10 years and know what to expect. Feel free to PM me if you want.

Private rehoming is fine when you already know the new owner well, have known them for a good period of time, and trust them - ie good friends and family. It's how I got my dog, and if mine had to be rehomed he would go to DF, who adores him.

Private rehoming is a very, very, very bad idea when you do not already know the person well. Typically such rehomings involve Gumtree, Pets4Homes, Facebook or other online adverts. Most people who are willing to take a dog from such sites are either clueless, would be turned down by rescue charities (who don't turn people down for fun) or have bad intentions (breeding from unspayed bitches, dog fighting etc).

However, if I had to rehome my dog and he couldn't go to DF, my first choice would be Dogs Trust. A healthy labradoodle with no significant behavioural problems will not stay in kennels for long.

Labradoodle will get snatched up in no time at dogs trust. We got our little terrier cross there, they where very thorough, home visit etc.

Will the breeder not take her back?

Through a breed specific rescue. That way, you know they're going to a well checked home and to someone experienced with the breed.

If you got her from a breeder that cares for their pups welfare then they will definitely take your dog back. I know many lab/poodle crosses are from disreputable sources, but it is worth contacting the breeder as they many be one of the few caring ones. Good luck, and I hope life gets easier for you.

This is one of the most overlooked benefits of choosing a breeder wisely. If your circumstances change you know there is someone out there that has your dog's best welfare at heart, knows the dog's history and will help find a good home.
