Do bitches know when they're pregnant?

I was just wondering if they somehow know they're pregnant or if they know what's happening when they go into labour. Or is it a shock for them when the puppies are born? Do they wonder what's happening when they feel the puppies moving inside them?

I should probably add before anyone bites my head off, that this is pure curiousity, I don't have a pregnant dog, I have a spayed rescue one instead :)

I don't think they 'know' but I do think all the right hormones and chemicals are released in their bodies at the right times so that they are less likely to panic or get stressed and the process feels ok.

They know about the same as we do. The puppies move inside, they get bigger and eventually tired. Hormones come in and labour. Whenever I've been with pregnant dogs they always seem to go through a change towards the end, like most pregnant women, even the sportier dogs end up reluctant to move!

I was wondering today how a bitch in whelp feels. Are they scared or do they know what's happening?
