Where does your spaniel sleep?

Just that, really. Thinking about getting a springer spaniel over the next few months, but I know spaniels in general can be prone to separation anxiety. So where do your spaniels sleep? In your bedroom, on your bed, or downstairs?

If you have them in your room, did you always intend to have your dog sleeping with you or did you fall into this habit because the dog was barking on his own? Can you leave your dog at home on his own for a few hours or does he have to come with you/go to a sitter?

Springer sleeps outside.. his choice, cocker sleeps on one of the sofas, she'll probably sleep outside too when she gets a bit older.
By outside they have insulated kennels and a dog door to come and go as they please in the house.

Hall, stairs and landing, now I have 2. When I had one he was in a crate in my room - just had him there from the start and hadn't tried his elsewhere. Couldn't have him loose in the room as he wanted to sleep on my head!

Dog2 (cocker), would sleep on my bed if he could - certainly if the DC come into my room in the morning, dog2 sneaks in behind them, jumps onto my bed and curls up at the bottom of the bed and is very reluctant to leave.

Our cocker initially slept in a massive crate in kitchen until he was 1 yr when we got rid of it. Now he sleeps on his bed on the floor beside my bed.

We do leave him up to three hours at a time but after that he goes to daycare as I want him to have company but equally I also want him to manage on his own for a few hours.

I do know people who leave their spaniel all day but I personally prefer daycare.

My Cavalier sleeps on the sofa downstairs. On holiday, he sleeps in a crate (he was crate-trained as a pup) so he feels at home.

Mine sleeps on my bed because I want her to but she would quite happily sleep in her bed downstairs.

She can be left for as long as she needs to be, never barks, doesn't do anything to the house, I come in after work and she is sprawled out on the sofa snoring. Not a care in the world - never had separation anxiety and the most laidback dog in the world

Utility room - always has done since a pup and just thinks of it as his bedroom. Very handy when you’re visitingpeople as he just accepts their utilities/porches as his temporary bedroom.

Technically he sleeps in the kitchen.
In reality he sneaks onto my bed when the lights are turned off.
If I'm very tired he also manages to bring his collection of bowls and balls onto the bed too .

Our springer sleeps downstairs in the lounge on his bed. He was crated at night when he was young and got used to being downstairs. He comes up in the morning for cuddles though!

The springer sleeps in my room. I had intended to move him downstairs when we tried it, even the smallest noise from him disturbed the older dogs who sleep in the kitchen. We struggled to settle them all in together anyway as the older two were not keen on a puppy arriving - so I didn't want to push them all too far.

I only really wanted to move him out the room because I don't like dogs on the bed as it disturbs my sleep and thought he would nag to get on the bed all the time. Actually, he only gets up for a five min cuddle last thing then gets down on his own and prefers the floor. He is quiet all night and doesn't try to wake me up in the morning so it's no more hassle having him in there than not.

In some ways, I wish I'd worked out a way to put him somewhere else as the house is a busy house and so he is never, ever left alone because we're all doing different things at different times. That is not great as he's now a year old and has not really had the experience being left I would have liked.

I tell myself little experience is better than bad experience...

In a small utility room. Our springer has severe separation anxiety despite years of training and behavioural experts. He needs to be in an enclosed space to feel safe when alone, which means either a crate or utility room at night, when we go out and even if I pop to the downstairs loo or into a different room. Otherwise he will wee, poo and cry.

I don't really know why he has such severe anxiety, we have other dogs who have no issues at all.

Downstairs, always has and hasn't batted an eyelid. He's never been created.

My two sleep with me if I let them, but they tend to get too hot & go downstairs to the sofa. They are very spoiled

Ours sleeps in the kitchen downstairs downstairs. But he randomly has started sneaking upstairs. (We sleep upstairs upstairs). At the caravan he insists on sleeping with me. If I lived alone would be with me always.

On his bed in the kitchen, he’s no bother at all (Cocker).

Sleeps downstairs, although in the hall as he never settled very well in the kitchen with the door shut.
On his own in the day while I'm at work, about 6 hours - we worked up to this with various help.

Has a choice of anywhere in the house except the spare room, but he always starts off on my bed and he’s always there when I wake up. Whatever he’s doing in between is quiet and non-destructive so I’m happy. He gets a bit upset if we’re out and I go away (if I leave him with someone to go to the loo, for example), but he’s absolutely fine with being left at home - I built up from a couple of minutes standing outside the garden gate, to 10 minutes, half an hour, a couple of hours etc, but it was very quick (he was an adult when I got him though).

Our cocker sleeps in her bed in the kitchen with stair gate on the door, always has from 8wks old. Separation anxiety is helped massively by routine and consistency so make a decision and stick to it. We put ours out for a wee, into bed, give her a stroke and say “it’s bedtime” and leave, similar to a riddle 😂. She hates the door shut though hence the stair gate, before she was neutered she was ‘clingy’ but seems to have settled since x

2 yr old Springer here, started off with a crate in the kitchen but wasn't very happy crated. There is a dog bed and a sofa in the kitchen- cat has the bed, dog has the sofa in the evening.
Used a stairgate on kitchen door which she was ok with at night until she realised she could jump it. Moved gate to stairs but a pain for us, now sleeps on her blanket on the floor on my side of bed and loves to come up for a stroke & rub in the morning.

She is good at being left - up to 4 hrs, she has the run of the house and tends to sleep at the top of the stairs during the day so she can see who is in and out.

I am fortunate that I work PT mostly from home and full day care is rarely needed but she has adapted brilliantly to anything we do, we spent 6 months abroad last year, so she had 3 days travel with a pet transporter company and it was hotter than any of the recent heat we have had here. Have to says she is much happier here though with mud, rivers, hills etc.
Would recommend as they are lovely dogs.
