Kennel cough vaccine

We were hoping to have a day out with my parents, dh and ds 15 months (their first grandchild) so they were going to put dog in a kennel. Kennel said he had to have kennel cough vaccine so they went to get it yesterday as we were going to go out tomorrow. Kennel now says he can't go as have to wait 2 weeks after vaccine administered.

Anyone heard of this before? This has now scuppered all plans, me and dh taken a day off tomorrow etc... Right pain! Vet didn't say anything about having to wait 2 weeks? Anyway... Here we are i suppose!

Yes totally common for kennels to specify a time period for this vaccination. Unlike other dog vaccinations this is a live one administered by the nose and thus there is a small risk of them shedding the virus for a few days afterwards as well as it taking a while to gain the immunity for those particular strains in the vaccine.

I get my dog vaccinated every year just before Christmas in case I ever need kennels later in the year as I know I won't need to board him around that time.

Maybe your vet didn't say anything if you didn't mention you were boarding soon afterwards.

Yes if kennels want the vaccine they say wait 2 weeks before kenneling, not all boarding kennels ask for Kc vaccine though

Different kennels have different rules so how do you think the vet was supposed to know?

Vaccines don't work right away antibodies take time to build up.

OK i just said the vet didn't say anything as a 2 week period for the vaccine to be live and contagious is an important piece of information. Any time i get a vaccine for me or my son they always give a time period for things to be live or contagious or how long they will make you feel poorly etc etc. Surely if dog can't be around other dogs for 2 weeks that's something that should be mentioned in the consultation?

I think this has been an oversight I don't think the vet has done anything wrong the kennel should have informed them of the 2 week wait imo

Not all kennels have that criteria although I wouldn't board with someone who didn't want the vaccine to minimise transmission (kennel cough vaccination doesn't stop all strains but I still get it for my dog).

Others have different time periods as I have been able to take my dog training after 1 week post vaccination.

Therefore it's important to check the rules for specific kennels etc. You sound defensive but we are just pointing out that it's not uncommon for kennels/day care and even some dog walkers to specify different rules regarding vaccinations specifically kennel cough.

It isn't really the vets fault as vaccinations are nothing to do with kenneling as some people get KC vaccine and never intend to board their dog.

You can not seriously expect the vet to know the criteria for all boarding kennels?

Try phoning around, you may find some other kennel that is willing to take the dog. My dog used to love going to kennels and was up to date on all his shots, my daughter was stopping with us for a year and we booked both dogs in, her dog had not had kennel cough injection the first time he was kenneled.

KC vaccine is a waste of time and money anyway as they can still get it.

They could try a dog sitter instead or a home boarder?

The kennel we tried said my parents had to get kc vaccine, so they went and got it, then said had to wait 2 weeks. In fairness I'm getting this whole story 2nd hand off my mum so who knows what's happening!

Can you not just change the day out to something dog friendly , most NT and EH places allow dogs , there are also lots of dog friendly beaches if that would be more fun for your LO .

Why not try a dog sitter?

Our vet told us just a few weeks ago that they had been advised that the kennel cough vaccine was potentially dangerous to pregnant women and the immunosuppressed ( she knows my DH is) and they have now had official guidance on this in veterinary practices. It’s a live vaccine I think and dog then is potentially able to transmit it following administration. She told us that our dogs could not now be given it.
Thankfully we leave them with friends when we are away and do not use kennels.

Similar from our Vet Star and they’ll only give it if we insist. Our dog goes to a home border who doesn’t require it.

Star that is shocking as my mum and myself are immunosuppressed. I wonder why we weren't given more info

We were not told of the reason why just it’s not recommended anymore unless essential and to avoid it if we absolutely can.

Intheprimeoflime you sound like you are just upset about missing out on a day trip with your family and i don't blame you! Especially if you and DH have booked time off work like you said. Really annoying that neither vet or kennels mentioned the 2 week wait. Out vet always just mentions it in passing when giving the jab !
