Dog cooling mats

fivedogstofeed · 28/06/2018 12:10

Any good? We are going away at the weekend so ordered these thinking they would be good for the car. They don't feel very …..cool?

Is there anything else I should get that is better? We have aircon, but the temperatures here are just crazy.

I've got one but my dog won't lie on it. To be honest the tile/stone floor seems just as cool although I suppose the gel filled mat may be comfier?

I did put it in his cage in the car as he was digging up his vet fleece to lie on the plastic base to get cool. I've taken it out now as I found if the car got warm when parked etc, the gel in the mat heated up and it was no longer a 'cool' mat!

drearydeardre · 28/06/2018 12:32

my dog ignored it in favour of the cool tile floor. Smile as all my previous dogs have done.

Sorry - internet issues Blush

resignedtoresigning · 28/06/2018 12:46

It's not a winner in our house either, Ddog views it with great suspicion and walks round it!

elQuintoConyo · 28/06/2018 12:49

We've been umming and ahhing about spunking €15 on one, don't think we 'll bother.

We also have tiled floors, Conyodog is usually found on the floor wherever there is a breeze!

I've been told to pop it into the fridge for 10-15 mins so the dog feels the instant cooling sensation first

Then they tend to use it as they know what it's for

SpanielsAreNuts · 28/06/2018 12:54

There are ones made of vastly different internal gels.

My one gets very cold when pressure is put on it. I even used it to rest my foot on to reduce swelling, when I'd hurt it.

However the dogs don't seem to understand what its purpose is and flop out on the laminate and lino instead.

LaGattaNera · 28/06/2018 13:23

yes my dog won't lie on it either!

abitoflight · 28/06/2018 15:15

Sniffed it, walked off

BellBookandCandle · 28/06/2018 15:25

Mine ate his!

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 28/06/2018 16:01

Will your dog lie on a damp cool towel -if no don't waste your money, if yes just use a cool damp towel Smile

They do have to be kept cool or they can actually raise the dogs body temperature.

Soubriquet · 28/06/2018 16:09

I will be investing in a dog cooling coat though

You get them wet, wring them out and pop on the dog. Top up with cool water as needed

Good for very hot days if you're at somewhere with your dog. Obviously no good for their feet, so still avoid concrete but if you're say, at a fun dog show, this is ideal for inbetween catagories

BluthsFrozenBananas · 28/06/2018 16:20

Thanks for posting this I was wondering about getting one, don't think I'll bother now. Do the cooling coats work for dogs with thick double coats does anyone know?

fivedogstofeed · 28/06/2018 18:49

Thanks all. I'm sending them back as I don't see an advantage at all and ddogs looked at me like I was weird when I showed them..

I think I might freeze a couple of plastic water containers so then can effectively sit beside a block of ice in the car ( and then drink it afterwards).

I’m run a small dog daycare/holiday business, with @120 dogs on my books. Bought two mats. Not one single dog uses them. If you have a small dog and a carpeted house, go to your local diy or tile store and buy a large tile/piece of slate. Place it on a towel, on top of your carpet and your dog will have a nice cool surface without the weird squishy feeling, the mats have. You could also use a strong glue and stick tiles to a very thin piece of sheet wood, slide it behind the sofa, when not in use.

PositivelyPERF · 28/06/2018 18:58

You could pick up some very cheap hot water bottles and place them under a thick mat, in the car.

Rainbowtrees · 28/06/2018 19:00

I got this one for my puppy and she loves it.

FairfaxAikman · 28/06/2018 19:00

My dogs prefer their cool coats. The coats (and I assume the mats) don't feel cool, they work by evaporation - basically imitating human sweating to a degree.

FairfaxAikman · 28/06/2018 19:02

@BluthsFrozenBananas did not know about thick coats but mine are all double-coated labs.

Pompoko · 30/06/2018 09:56

I think it’s the plastic cover that puts them off. I put mine in a toddler bed sheet to get mine to use it

Fatjilly · 30/06/2018 10:41

Both my dogs and the cat love cooling mats. The dogs also have cooling bandanas which work really well, quickly cooling them down. Old dog has a double coat and little dog has a thick curly woolly coat.
