I think I am going to have to start picking times and places,Bitey. The good news is once the rain has made the woods very muddy they will be less popular than in the summer. Choc lab is a bit of a pain but not aggressive. Other lab is more of a worry but owner seems to do exactly the same route at more or less the same time each day so we are doing our woods walk later in the morning. Or very early!
Don’t feel guilty distant, it takes a while to find out what works for you and ddog, I find a walk around the village both on and off lead with a bit of training to sit at the kerbside, for example, tires her out in a better way to leave her for a few hours than a hours offlead walk with squirrel hunting etc.
Squirrel , older dog is very slow and isn’t going very far( just up the lane that joins the woods with the rest of our walk)and younger dog is presumably offlead to compensate for lack of distance. Probably lack of exercise may be contributing to her aggressiveness but I don’t know.
Me and my DH have also worked together for the past twenty years distant, the difference is that he is ten years older than me with an intermittently complaining back, so I tend to do most of the walking...would love us to hike together.
I think Bella so deserves that chicken leg😁

Soubriquet · 30/08/2018 19:15

Awww I hope Belladog enjoyed that.

Reminds me of when I had my old dog Nero pts. The day before, I went out and got him a rotisserie chicken and a bag of chocolate buttons all to himself. He deserved that one last treat

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 30/08/2018 20:20

Absolutely Soubriquet, our last dog, blind and with dementia by 14 years old went out on cooked sardines. Funnily enough, cocodog is also a fish fan, raw, tinned and cooked!

BiteyShark · 30/08/2018 20:35

Aww hope Bella enjoyed her warm chicken leg.

After BiteyDog turned his nose up at cooked cod fillets DH has been tempting him with chicken breasts. We stopped feeding him chicken a while back as it upset his stomach but we tried again and so far so good. His eyes are like saucers when he sees the chicken Grin

Agh 6 months recall vanished.........

BiteyShark · 31/08/2018 08:05

geekone BiteyDog was to put it mildly a little shit from that age with recall.

I had several months of him being terrible and running off into the forest. A couple of times he even scared himself when he spooked a deer and gave chase then had to work out where I was blowing the bloody whistle for 10 minutes (although that could have happened to most dogs). It does come back but you have to keep practicing it. Around 10 months of age I noticed a considerable improvement.

I looked at several methods during this time and some worked and some didn't but I do remember drinking a lot of Wine to calm the nerves Grin

Sympathies geekone,I remember thinking we had just got on an even keel with Eric as a puppy and then we were flung into adolescence which was like hardcore puppydom Grin Eric still answers to bad boy because he heard it so regularly I think.
Bella had a slightly longer walk this morning with no problems so she is picking up nicely I will gloss over the fact she woke me at three so she could sleep on the downstairs bed instead of the sofa Hmm The guilt and sympathy from me have unleashed a monster in her I think Grin

Squirrel26 · 31/08/2018 15:14

Haha, she will be in your bed by this time next week. Grin

Taking SquirrelDog to the enclosed dog field this evening so I don’t have to stress about his non existent recall for a bit.

BiteyShark · 31/08/2018 17:35

Think BiteyDog has an allergic reaction to something. He has been half sneezing for weeks and I have been hoping he would get better but recently he's been waking up at night several times and clearly struggling to breath. Starting him on piriton and hoping it gets better because the other thing it could be is something stuck up there given he a hunting dog.

OP posts:
fleshmarketclose · 31/08/2018 18:11

Oh no poor biteydog Sad Hope the piriton does the trick.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 31/08/2018 18:47

There have been a lot of warnings about grass seeds being a problem this year, Bitey...might be worth checking out with your vet?
geekone, Cocodog was also a little shit when she lost recall 💐

BiteyShark · 31/08/2018 18:52

Sorry should have said been to the vets and they suggested piriton first unless it gets worse as to look up his nose requires admitting with anaesthetic which we know doesn't go well with BiteyDog Sad.

The fear though is a grass seed as couldn't feel anything bigger and he goes 'hunting' in the forest. Really hoping it's an allergic reaction instead.

On the upside the piriton might make him sleepy Wink

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 31/08/2018 20:59

Let’s hope it is an allergic reaction then and the piriton helps!
We have been trying to give Cocodog a quiet day because we are off to a county show tomorrow, meeting our adult dc. She will be thrilled but will be exhausted!

BiteyShark · 31/08/2018 23:02

It's a good job I love the furry monster because at the moment he is generating a lot of snot and it's going everywhere [boak].

Enjoy the country show with Cocodog.

Aww poor Biteydog. Bella has taken herself to bed tonight so obviously prefers the bed to the sofa. I suppose it doesn't matter really I only use the room when it's hot upstairs anyway.

BiteyShark · 01/09/2018 06:10

BiteyDog loves the spare bed more than his bed and sofa. I think he would like to sleep there all night but gets lonely so comes in with us after his last pee of the night. However because he's struggling at night I slept in there with him last night so he got a bit more sleep.

Little Madam is still luxuriating in "her" bed. Seems in no hurry to get up either so will potter about until she decides it's time for a walk I suppose. The need to be up at the crack of dawn seems to have left her as she has settled in so I think that's a blessing.
At the vets they were so nice about me taking on an elderly rescue particularly as it looks like she was used for multiple breedings so they think she might have been a puppy farm bitch and the "home" was just a front (I couldn't understand why she came with a dirty positively minging food bowl, really matted and a flea infestation (the house was large and immaculate), no toys and an unopened bag of food and they didn't seem at all bothered to be losing a "much loved" pet) But she is such a darling and brings me and the kids so much pleasure that it feels like we are the lucky ones. I'm hoping we can give her a long and happy retirement to make up for what she as been through previously.

BiteyShark · 01/09/2018 09:40

It is lovely that you have given her a home and she can spend her retirement being loved rather than used as a commodity.

I know someone who took on quite a poorly old dog. The dog had been kicked out and abandoned by its previous owners to make room for a new puppy. Some people are just horrible but fortunately their are others like yourself to show them that they are loved.

BiteyShark · 01/09/2018 09:48

We have been for a very quick run about today as I am conscious that he must be feeling rough with his nose. He still wants to run about but ends up snorting lots to breath.

I also need to cut down on the food a bit as I noticed he had put a bit of weight on at the vets and his poos are soft and I have over compensated for the daycare trauma a bit too much so don't want him to gain anymore.

OP posts:
fleshmarketclose · 01/09/2018 10:10

The desire to compensate them is a terrible thing Bitey. The vet nurse told me that I need to watch how much I feed Bella now that she has been spayed as she will put on weight easier. She said it's too easy to give treats because we feel sorry for them so I'll bear that in mind. We've done a decent stroll today probably half her usual walk so I'm happy at that and Bella seems glad to have been out and about again. Can't wait until the stitches come out next Friday and we can get back to normal.

distantdog · 01/09/2018 14:45

When I've been worried about how things are going to go with Ddog, I confess the desire to compensate myself with Wine Wine Wine has also been a terrible thing!!

We have been much better since the vet called her "a little fatty" but as you say flesh and Bitey, when they are in discomfort or distress and you know there's only one thing you can do to make them feel better it's so hard to resist... one thing that is helping is that Ddog seems to instantly forget she's just been fed so we're telling ourselves there's no point giving her something else as she'll just be on the scavenge minutes later!

DH returned from the shop with Dentastix that are for her actual weight and not for a bigger dog. Obviously we're going to let her finish the "for dogs over 25kg pack" first but we are trying. We are in a really solid routine with her where she knows she goes out for a last wee before bed and then gets a dentastix whilst DH brushes his teeth and then it's lights out for 8 hours, so we're not going to break that routine as getting a full night's sleep is one of the joys of not getting a young puppy!!

BiteyShark · 01/09/2018 15:02

Oh yes I definitely compensated with Wine and Cake during BiteyDogs illnesses. Still trying to lose the few pounds I put on at that time.

Fortunately for BiteyDog I can simply reduce the few nuggets of kibble he gets for a bit of crunch with his wet food without him really noticing. Also being back with his usual daycare next week and the additional days we need to do at the new daycare will probably drop his weight a bit as he burns lots of calories running about all day.

OP posts:
distantdog · 01/09/2018 15:13

Ah but Bitey... is there anything better than a bath with Wine and Cake?

Hope biteydog is better soon - DH gets bad hayfever at a very specific 2 weeks of the season here (we've not quite pinned down what it is) but it led to full-on bronchitis one year despite the daily piriton, so either way - whether it's an allergy or something stuck up his little nose - I hope it's sorted soon but good that you are keeping an eye on him.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 01/09/2018 17:56

Flesh, for a nation of supposed dog lovers there are some very cruel people around. Lucky Bella now though!
Although it wasn’t massively hot today, it was warm at the show and I was a bit worried about taking Cocodog..there were masses of dogs there...gung ho terriers having a go at terrier racing and then jumping in a big trough of water for a cool down...all sizes and shapes of dogs...a little lake for dogs to paddle in but Cocodog was fine, she had her water ( refuses point blank to drink out of communal bowls) , was in her shortest hair clip phase and to the disgust of our adult dc who met us there resided under a sun umbrella to give her shade whilst we sat on the grass and had lunch.😁

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 01/09/2018 18:01

She must be exhausted but little so and so still asked for her football game when we got home! Gave her two kicks then supper. She is now very asleep on the sofa where she will probably stay until DH fires up the bbq.
