Frozen kong

So I am aware this is a stupid question but I see lots of people suggesting frozen kongs for their dogs but what do you actually put in them? And do you give them to your dog still frozen?

One of my dogs has a lot of allergies and is only allowed his prescription food, absolutely nothing else, so really that's my only option for putting in a kong. I'll need to give the same to my other dog just incase there's any sharing. I've soaked some of his kibble in water mixed with a little of his wet food, stuffed a couple of kongs and put them in the freezer. Is that it? Do I just give it to them frozen?

I'm also very limited in what toys I can give him as anything that he manages to chew and swallow sets off his symptoms so he's currently restricted to antlers. Hoping the kongs give him a bit more excitement!

You could also look at some toys that are designed to dispense kibble eg DDog likes Kong wobbler, Kong gyro, and the Nina Ottosson range of puzzle toys.

Have your dog's allergies been identified? If so, would he be able to have something like plain boiled chicken? It would make a kong more interesting - lots of dogs won't work for their regular food, especially kibble.

I put peanut butter in the kong and give it to my dog when it's frozen solid. She loves it and it lasts for ages. Because of the shape of the kong it rolls about all over the place and she loves playing with it as much as she loves eating the contents. Kong sell their own filling that comes in a tube, think it's a kind of doggy pate but obviously it may not be suitable because of the allergies.

No his allergies haven't been identified yet. We're not 100% sure exactly what's going on. He's been investigated for liver shunt, Addisons, thyroid, pancreatitis and all clear. Current thinking is maybe inflammatory bowel but his trial of steroids (vet not keen to do biopsy) isn't really making a difference. He's staying on hypoallergenic for now but I'm hoping to do allergy testing next and depending what it shows will start to cook his own food and make treats in dehydrator as life's pretty boring when you're only allowed one bland food.

Banana, peanut butter, yogurt, primula loads of things. I kept my mutt cool today by putting frozen strawberries in his water. He loves strawberries 🍓

Hopefully you can get to the bottom of the digestive issues / allergies and he can have a more interesting diet soon!

Wobblers and other similar toys are only meant to keep dogs occupied for a relatively short period of time - certainly not hours! If they kept having to work at the puzzle without getting rewarded then they will get frustrated and it's no longer fun for them :) It doesn't mean the dog doesn't enjoy using them or that they're not doing the job - they are!

This might sound grim but I make blood ice lollies. I got the idea from seeing lions being given something similar. You could dilute the blood and then freeze in cubes or in a kong. Goes down a treat and might be ok for your boy as there are no additives?
