Barking

My dogs pretty good all round. I'm a sahm so he's hardly ever on his own.

We have just moved from a detached to a terrace. I'm sure he wasn't barking at the old house but hard to tell. Sometimes he would be barking when I got back but I assumed it was because he heard the car.

Anyway, he's nearly always barking when I get back to the new house. I've just asked the neighbours and they said he barks pretty much the whole time I'm out.

What can I do to stop him. I feel like he might calm down once he's settled in a bit more, we've only been here 3 weeks. But if he doesn't I can't leave him barking the place down every time I go to the shops.

He's not a barker normally, just people at the door. Generally pretty quite. He's a small dog but his bark is loud.

My dog doesn't like noises outside and I would imagine if we moved from detached to terrace he would bark more. Do you use a radio to help 'drown' out the noises?

Also get a camera so you can see what is upsetting him. They are very cheap, I paid £40 and I can watch and listen to him live on my phone. This may help you decide what he is barking at. For example, when I saw mine was barking at the reflection in glass I put up frosting, after that he would bark if a car door was shut so I put on the radio (music channel as talk channel made him worse as he could hear humans).

Where is he kept at the moment? Maybe experiment with different rooms or create a 'den' to make him feel safer in a small space.

How long are you leaving him for?

Have you tried settling him with a Kong or a treat/chew toy so he has something to occupy himself with?

I did wonder if it was the noises from the other houses setting him off. It's pretty thick walls and we can't hear the neighbours, although he may be able too. There are flats at the end of the road and he's been getting agitated by cars driving past thinking it's dh coming home. There's definitely more noise than at the last place.

I'll try leaving a radio on and will see about getting a camera. Is it a specific type of camera.

I'll experiment with rooms too. At the moment he can go anywhere but the kids rooms.

I use an igeek ip camera other makes available . Essentially look for one that streams live to your phone and ideally can be rotated remotely by your phone as then you can position it so you can see the whole room. Also you want sound and ideally one that has infra red so if you need to shut curtains etc you can still see them.

My dog does it, it's separation anxiety and not easy to combat, we are working on it, luckily the neighbours have been ok about it.

He shows no other signs of distress. He doesn't destroy things, he doesn't scratch or chew, he sometimes move a shoe, I guess to smell it but that's it.

Mine was barking simply because of external factors. Although seperation anxiety is often the first thing people think of it may be other things and the fact that you have moved house and now have new and probably more noises may be unsettling him.

OK I'm going to try confine him to the halls and my bedroom which will be quitest from neighbours and I'm going to leave the bedroom radio on.

I'll see if I can get an app on my tablet to record sound so I can see how he gets on.
