Not getting toilet training

I have had my puppy for two weeks and we don’t seem to be making any progress on toilet training. If I take her outside (which I do constantly) she will wee / poo out there but if she happens to be inside and needs the toilet she will just go. She makes no attempt to get outside. She is having very few accidents inside (yesterday she had none) but that is because I am taking her out so much (atleast every half an hour) and not because she is going outside. She just happens to be outside when she needs to go.

Please tell me it gets better! The thought of having a dog that constantly pees round the house and never gets toilet training terrifies me!

It does ours was still seeing inside then too (never pooped inside). Do you say pee pee or wee wee when you go outside then again when they pee and make a huge song and dance about it? We are in week 8 and we have had one accident this week. I would say 13 weeks he got it a bit more.

I say toilet when she goes outside and she is pretty good at weeing on command outside. I try to make a fuss when she goes outside but she won’t take any treats that I have found and she tends to run in the opposite direction if I am to enthusiastic when I try to fuss her.

You are doing exactly the right thing. The puppy always needs to be in the right place at the right time at this stage so any accidents will be your fault for not making sure they can’t happen.

How often are you taking her outside? I find when they're small they don't know when they need to go, so they need taking REALLY regularly and given a command to go, and a treat when they go. Eventually you can phase out the treat and give the command.

Our puppy is 16 weeks and will always at least wee on command, and lets us know when he needs a poo. However he has had a few wee accidents inside because if he needs to go, he just goes! He's never once pooed in the house, though.

I take her out atleast every half an hour unless she is sleeping, then I take her out as soon as she wakes. I also take her out when she looks like she might need to go. I am spending ALOT of time in the garden.

It’s good to hear I am doing the right thing. Maybe I am being to impatient and expecting her to get it to soon.

CleverQuacks I think the new puppy anxiety is talking here. She is still very very young. Lots don't get it until much older.

As long as you are minimising accidents and praising outside when she goes she will get it eventually when she gets better bladder control.

Give her time and take a deep breath you are panicking over nothing! You have had her two weeks

She is doing brilliantly to be going outside. I feel you are overeacting to this a bit. She will be trained and you will not have a dog that wees in the house forever BUT for the next few weeks you have to continue what you are doing.

Be careful giving her a reward for peeing- at what point will you give the reward? When she starts to wee, she will stop weeing take the treat and come indoors and wee.

At the end of the wee then she will stop weeing so that she gets the reward quicker!

So just a lot of verbal praise is the best thing and patience.

I am a very positive trainer who give treats out for everything but never for toilet training.

It just takes time, and you just need to keep on with what you are doing. It will work out in the end

You are right, I know I am overreacting. We have just had a bad day today (2 wees inside straight after being outside) and so I am catastrophising! I will keep up with what I am doing.

I hadn’t thought about her stopping weeing to get a treat. She doesn’t really take treats anyway so I won’t give her them for this. Just verbal praise and fuss.

I never treat for toileting either. It just muddies the waters. The relief of emptying is enough.

As Val says they can begin to not empty properly. Also bear in mind they don’t realise you’re treating them for the location; it’s not unheard of for pups to squat on the rug and wee expecting a treat.

CleverQuacks how about rewarding yourself when she wees outside - way more fun, it could become the best drinking game ever or treat yourself to chocolate every time she wees.

Either way it would make it all more fun for you

At least it's summer! I'm sure your puppy will get it soon. Breakthrough is when they go to the door to show they need the toilet.

CleverQuacks it's so easy to think you will have the dog that always pees inside, or the one that doesn't stop biting, or the one that is unruly. I also think there is pressure to get everything right and training finished when they are a few months old but honestly training is a marathon and expect to continue to work and reinforce behaviours all the time as they grow and develop.

OP, I could be you right now except my puppy is 5 months old. Today has been better for accidents but only because I was bringing her out every 20 mins. Even at that she came in and did a pee in the carpet. It’s so frustrating but I’m hoping it will get better soon. In our case I think she is drinking a lot more than usual because of the warm weather and is not used to having a full bladder.

Mine is also five months old and every time I think we’ve cracked it he disappoints me with another poo or wee indoors.
He knows he mustn’t go on the carpet so sometimes jumps up to do it on the furniture. I’ve never known such a dim-witted dog.
