How many ticks has your dog had so far this year?

beepsheep · 14/06/2018 12:57

We have found 4 ticks on my boy this year alone even though we take all the necessary precautions (tick collar, spray, spot on etc). Just curious if this is an insanely high number or quite normal.

Only a few so far but I saw a woman picking dozens of the little bastards off her long haired dog in the park yesterday. I keep my boy very short haired in the summer to make it easier to spot them.

Clairetree1 · 14/06/2018 13:01

I am sure you really love your dog. Nevertheless I would be far more concerned that you and your family re walking in tick infested areas. What precautions are you taking? boots? gaiters?

Floottoot · 14/06/2018 13:04

None, even though we walk in sheep fields a lot. We use Bravecto with him - one tablet prevent fleas and ticks for 3 months.

MaxPepsi · 14/06/2018 13:07

None. He's never had one in his entire 8 years.

I have absolutely no idea what we treat him with either as DH does it Blush

Lumisade · 14/06/2018 13:09

My dog has had 3. I on the other hand have had about 12 of the blighters on me so far this year. I always go out wearing long trousers and long socks but they still get me.

GfordMum101 · 14/06/2018 13:09

The cat has had loads!! It's a really bad year. Both myself and my husband have had tick bites this year, attached whilst doing the gardening. I took them off with the cats tick remover !! You don't even need to be walking through long grass, or in the country, as wild animals will bring them in to your garden. We are in a "bad" area though.... my husband is actually on antibiotics for suspected Lyme, and the GP said she had never seen so many people come in with tick bites. Fortunately they are pretty hot on it now, they didn't used to be.

Jupiter15 · 14/06/2018 13:09

2, getting some Bravecto today!

satonthesofa · 14/06/2018 13:15

I second Bravecto. One tablet every three months. No ticks. Live in a very tricky area!!
Previously used collar or liquid with much less success.

OrcinusOrca · 14/06/2018 13:17

None. I've had one dog for nearly 10 years and he has had one I've known of, the other who (10, but got aged 5, and 2) have had none that I know of.

Hello, we've moving this over to our The Doghouse topic now. Smile

Oh no leave it here! I don't have a dog, but one of my kids has had two since April Grin

BiteyShark · 14/06/2018 13:23

My dog gets many after most walks but he walks through the forest most days.

Think the record was around 6 after one walk and they were just the ones we noticed. Was annoyed the other day when I went for a road walk and still found one crawling on him afterwards.

We live in a very high tick area Sad

lifechangesforever · 14/06/2018 13:27

My dogs are 9 and 4 and neither of them has ever had a tick. I don't treat them with anything specific, are ticks worse in certain areas?

SirVixofVixHall · 14/06/2018 13:35

You can send ticks away to be checked for Lyme’s I think ? I will google, I know there was some scheme in place. Be very, very careful how you remove ticks, as any distress to the tick causes it to regurgitate stomach contents, and increases the risk hugely. Also avoid gett8ng blood on your skin. Lyme’s is a massive problem, we know someone with it and it has been terrible. I worry very much about ticks as my dog can’t have any of the anti tick drugs, so she could pick up Lyme’s and act as a vector for Lyme’s in us.

BiteyShark · 14/06/2018 13:36

lifechangesforever you can find ticks everywhere but if you walk in areas of woodland etc you are more likely to get them especially if lots of deer/sheep around. We get lots because of the very large numbers of deer in the forest and our garden until we started closing the gate so the deers couldn't wander in at night and eat my plants

Allycumpooster · 14/06/2018 13:41

We had 4 in a week a few weeks ago but nothing since. I check every day, we walk through very long grass and in forest. I wear shorts and sandals and have never had one I must taste yucky. I feel almost offended Grin

beepsheep · 14/06/2018 13:43

Found one on my boy this morning and as I was using the twisty thing the bloody parasite somehow burst open and got me right in the face. Be careful folks! Also, do you prefer to remove them with tick tweezers or twisty tools?

OP posts:
Lonecatwithkitten · 14/06/2018 13:44

This shows the tick threat by area in the U.K. I am a vet in a purple area, within 7 days of the snow ending I removed the first tick from a dog. This is the worse year I have known in the 20 years I have worked in this area.

BiteyShark · 14/06/2018 13:46

I find they always attach very close to my dogs eyes or in his ears. Given that they are sensitive areas there is no way he would let me anywhere near with tweezers or tick twizzlers things. Sometimes I am lucky and I spot them moving on his head so they get killed and flushed down the toilet with great pleasure.

GfordMum101 · 14/06/2018 13:47

I always use the twisty tool, and they have all come away intact and undamaged so far. The little buggers will even try to walk away if you let them. I put them in tissue and stamp on them :-)

Soubriquet · 14/06/2018 13:48

None.

Found one on my cat for the first time the other day so both animals have been treated with advocate.

BiteyShark · 14/06/2018 13:49

Lonecatwithkitten I'm in a purple area as well and bloody sick of them already.

Soubriquet · 14/06/2018 13:53

Wow surprisingly I'm in a red area.

Yet I've never had a tick on one of my dogs, and the one on Toots was only the second I've had on any of my cats.

We suffer fleas more than ticks

Cath2907 · 14/06/2018 13:54

I'm in a purple area and we walk through fields twice daily. I always wear long trousers and socks and boots. No ticks on me or dog. He takes Bravecto from the vet.
