How many ticks has your dog had so far this year?

beepsheep · 14/06/2018 12:57

We have found 4 ticks on my boy this year alone even though we take all the necessary precautions (tick collar, spray, spot on etc). Just curious if this is an insanely high number or quite normal.

We live in a high risk area according to the map.

On one walk recently we removed over 30 tick larvae from one of our dogs. Non attached though as they were removed before they got the chance! It was a walk in a wet area with long grass and bracken so hardly a surprise.

Other walks where we stick to the paths and do not walk through the long grass we will get none.

Choose your walks carefully I guess

I’m in an orange area, but I imagine that nearby mountains, covered in sheep, are higher risk in reality. Friends had ten or more ticks each on them when they went walking there last Summer.

olivetor7 · 14/06/2018 14:06

Live in a medium/high risk area, and have never had a tick on any dog in 20 years. We don’t use tick prevention either, and walk in long grass and woodlands. I didn’t realise ticks were such a huge problem. Horrid things.

SirVixofVixHall · 14/06/2018 14:07

The nymph ticks are the size of this full stop. They are incredibly hard to see and the most likely to transmit Lyme.

pudding21 · 14/06/2018 14:13

I live overseas and we have a big tick problem here. Luckily my dog is white and I can spot them really easily. Yesterday we were just walking down the road near low grass and he had one near his ears, he wasn't even in long grass.

He wears an impregnated collar and I did notice the other day a dried up old one stuck near his armpit, so it works. If the tick burrows, then if they have enough protection they die.

They are horrid beasts!

Yokohamajojo · 14/06/2018 14:38

None so far but last summer he had about 4, we treat with Spectra something and live in a medium risk area. He loves loves loves running in long grass though

Ruffian · 14/06/2018 14:55

Never had a tick 'til last summer when he averaged one a week, this year shaping up the same so far and I had my first one on me!

No reaction to them tho'.

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2018 15:00

I'm in Ireland & we've had more than usual this year on both the dogs & the cat. We are treating them all regularly.

tabulahrasa · 14/06/2018 15:33

He’s never had one, he’s 6 next month... don’t treat for them, or fleas either tbh.

That map says medium risk, but, it covers a huge area... so... no sheep farming anywhere near here and he doesn’t go anywhere deer are either. We’re in a low flea area as well.

I used to live in Argyll, I treated for ticks then, there were loads.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/06/2018 15:37

Nothing yet, I do keep the twisty too ready though.

I have mine vaccinated for Lime disease as well.

Trampire · 14/06/2018 15:51

Loads!

I found 5 on my Border T last week after a walk. At least one every day.

I've just had him stripped so his fur is really short. We do a tick check at home after every walk. We're trying to avoid the places with the longest grass, but he even picks them up in the woods.

I think they're quite bad this year. We used to get a tick collar from the vet but it didn't seem to make a difference. We find just checking regularly works well.

Horrid things.

adaline · 14/06/2018 16:04

None. We're in a low-medium risk area and have a very short haired beagle! We do try and keep him out of long grass though and check twice after every walk.

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 14/06/2018 16:05

ChardonnaysPRettySister are you in the uk to get the lyme vaccine?

Lovemusic33 · 14/06/2018 16:08

My dog hasn’t had any but I had one removed today, because it had been there over 24 hours as was given antibiotics to reduce the risk of lymes. I am in a high risk area.

Whitney168 · 14/06/2018 16:15

Map shows us as a low-medium risk area, but clearly no-one has told the ticks that. I was removing the first ones back in March and have had loads. Angry

Have used Advocate+ here and am now resorting to trying garlic powder every day too.

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/06/2018 16:22

The Lyme disease vaccine is available in the UK, but the advice from the manufacturers is that it is not instead of rigorous tick control, but as well as in high incidence areas as it does not provide complete protection against Lyme. In fact is protection levels are not as high as the core vaccines somewhere around 72% protection. It is also a relatively expensive vaccine needing to have a booster every single year.

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/06/2018 16:24

Whitney Advocate does not protect against ticks. Advantix or Seresto are the Bayer products that protect against ticks.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/06/2018 16:27

My vet in the UK does it.

I’m terrified I’ll miss a tick even though I check all the time, my dogs are quite fluffy.

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 14/06/2018 17:00

Thanks LonecateiwthKitten* so I still need to have the tomotwister as my most used accessory for summer 2018.

Have you noticed that theticks are more resistant, in 2014 advantix worked really well, seresto was fab in 2015 not so good 2016 still got loads of ticks. This year seresto is useless for us.

I can not use bravetco or nexguard due to epilepsy so just resorted to daily/hourly tick checks

Whitney168 · 14/06/2018 17:31

Sorry, am being a pillock, I meant Frontline Plus not Advocate ...

Floralnomad · 14/06/2018 17:48

I’m also in a red area and we’ve never had one on our dog and he’s 8 and always running about in long grass on our local heath . We did have one on our horse once . We use Bravecto at the moment and have so far never had any fleas either . Dog is kept clipped very short though so that probably helps .

PurdysChocolate · 14/06/2018 18:00

We usually get about 10 a year? We have a setter that is walked in the woods, I assume she picks them up there running through the brush. We have had 2 this year so far. However, one of my cats got a tick a few weeks ago, which has never happened before.

Scoochywoochy · 14/06/2018 18:14

Our dogs have had quite a few this year so far. Some had bitten but most were crawling around. I even found one crawling up the kitchen wall a few days ago!! I've also been bitten a few times but prefer not to go out in shorts these days for that reason. We are in a high risk area though.

TropicPlunder · 14/06/2018 21:26

About 5000 but we're in the tropics. I was hoping when we move to the UK, that tick-picking would stop being such a pastime....But this thread isn't giving me much hope! Confused

Blackbutler86 · 14/06/2018 21:34

One of mine has had 2 so far and never had any previously (he is 5), my other 3 haven't had any. I have since changed their flea treatment from advocate to advantix. From what I've read online it won't stop ticks attaching but using advantix will kill the tick within 24 hours, I have been checking them throughly after walks though.
