Hi I looking for a small, child friendly, low shedding breed who will be happy with 30 Min walk a day and won’t bark incessantly. We have had a dog before but a larger breed. Any recommendations. I quite like small cuddly teddy bear types.

Cuddly bear types = lots of grooming.

Shih Tzu? Very friendly, squashy and cuddly, not as yappy as some small breeds, quite happy to look out of the window and have an occasional walk. Needs regular grooming though.

Bichon Frise, curly haired, non shedding, easy to train and usually very even tempered.

Border terrier?

Miniature poodle.

Second Bichon Frisé. From the one I know, sounds perfect for your requirements.

Shmithecat · 09/06/2018 16:25

Mini schnauzer.

Depends entirely on the actual dog rather than the breed. We have a Westie - OUR westie is good with kids, a nice cuddly dog who loves to sleep on your lap, doesn't shed, DD not allergic (she is allergic to lots of breeds + cats etc), he only needs half an hour walk twice a day.

My neighbour's Westie - I will not have anywhere near my children (who are 15 and 17) - it is a little snipper.

id go for a greyhound if you want a dog that doesnt need massive walks and is gentle and lazy.

shrinkrap · 09/06/2018 16:51

Maltese. Small, playful, friendly and non-shedding. And very cute!

I have a tiny chihuahua that adores children and adores cuddling. He's very fluffy and he doesn't shed.

How old are your children? If they're quite young bear in mind that a more robust breed would be sensible, as a toddler could be slightly rough and injure something like a chihuahua very, very easily

isthismummy · 10/06/2018 07:46

Only on here could an op state they want a small breed and be recommended a greyhoundGrin

Have a mini poodle and she is absolutely great. Loves everyone, very clever so learns tricks and obedience almost instantly. She loves playing with toys. Best of all she is the same if she is walked for ten mins a day or two hours. She is eight this year and still acts like a two year old.
We've had Labradors, wolfhounds and Great Danes but our girl is so easy. Clipped every couple of months and no hair loss.

I have a miniature poodle x Lhasa apso (cue the made up name - Lhasapoo Hmm ) but he is the most gentle natured, gorgeous wee dog ever. Non shedding, but still needs groomed every couple of months. Loves a walk and a ball thrown but equally content curled up in his bed or beside the fire. Perfect for our family, we got him when my youngest dc was 3.

French bulldogs are perfect family pets, small, compact, minimal shedding, great with children and there are loads available on rescue sites to avoid back street breeders.

sproodlemummy · 10/06/2018 08:18

Most dogs will require more than a 30 minute walk per day.

Paddingtonthebear · 10/06/2018 08:22

Maltese? My friend has one and it doesn’t seem to need much exercise /walking. They are very tiny though, not very “robust” looking! And apparently very needy though and can’t be left alone.

We have a shih txu x poodle. She is non moulting, very happy, affectionate/loyal. She does need to go to groomers every 6-8 weeks which is £35 a pop. She is quite energetic, poodles are retrievers so she loves playing fetch, swimming, running. She has 2-3 walks a day. Definitely not a lap dog!

letsgooutandfindsometrouble · 10/06/2018 08:22

Forgot to add they only need a short walk per day, approximately 30mins. They don't do well with lots of exercise and are equally happy with a good run around/play in the garden.

PetraDelphiki · 10/06/2018 08:25

Maltese again! Ours is soooo calm, loves kids and is the cutest thing alive! Needs 2 walks per day but they can be short (just long enough to poo), but happy to do longer walks if you like! Have left alone for up to 4 hours (I think it bothers me more than him)...
