Boy vs Girls

Another question from me I am afraid!

I have noticed that girl puppies are often more expensive than boys. Is this purely due to the fact that girl puppies can be bred from and are thus more desirable?

Is there any other differences between boys and girls? I have no intention of breeding my dog, he/she will purely be a pet so I don’t specifically need a girl. Unless there is something I am missing about Male dogs which make them less desirable?

I have only ever had a male dog and presumed the same as you that bitches were sometime dearer as you can breed from them.

I choose a male dog deliberately as I didn't want the hassle of managing seasons etc.

I guessed the same re the price. Based purely on my experience of my own dogs (not scientific at all) I will probably be sticking to boys in the future. Nothing against the girls, but prefer not to deal with the seasons and have found the boys to be more laid back

Very unusual to see a price difference these days, but yes used to be associated with ability to breed on.

Whether a male or a bitch will suit you better may depend hugely on breed and your set-up, or may make little to no difference. In my breed the males are very easy and affectionate, but in some males can be more challenging.

In my experience I find females to be more loving and affectionate.

However saying that, although my current girl is very loving she’s also high maintenance!

It depends on the breed and what you want out of the dog. A female German shepherd for example will be different than a female jack Russell

If there’s a price difference between girls and boys in the same litter, yes it’s because you can breed from girls... and indicates they’re not the best breeders as otherwise they’d all be the same price.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have been doing some reading. I am hoping to get a chihuahua and everything I have read suggests that Male chihuahua’s are on average more loyal and affectionate.

This has surprised me. For some reason I had always imagined having a female dog but now I am considering a Male.

There are so many things to consider!

It really is personal preference.

I have male dogs, just because in my experience they are more laid back and easy going than females, who I find can be quite moody.

However I know plenty of people who would only have girls, plenty who would only have boys and plenty who will have either (most of the people in this bracket have rescue dogs).

I would also echo this - If there’s a price difference between girls and boys in the same litter, yes it’s because you can breed from girls... and indicates they’re not the best breeders as otherwise they’d all be the same price Good breeders are so stringent on when their bitch can be bred from (supported by KC endorsements) that most females they sell will never be bred from.
