Anyone know if you can use the cat version of meta cam for dogs?

Ddog is on long term pain medication for an infection on his spine with daily metacam supplemented with gabapentin three times a day. Dh has been in charge of his evening meal for the last week which is when he has his metacam and neglected to tell me that we were running low. Now we’ve run out and it’s the middle of the bank holiday weekend...Hmm

We’ve got a bottle of the cat version of metacam - can we give that to him today and tomorrow or are they different formulations? Anyone know??

Are there any emergency vets you can call yo ask?

LEMtheoriginal · 06/05/2018 07:05

They are different strengths so no

crabb · 06/05/2018 07:09

This page indicates they are the same strength: www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/productInformationdatabase/

This surprises me, they are different strengths here in Australia

crabb · 06/05/2018 07:18

Sorry, I missed that there are 2 strengths for dogs : 0.5mg/kg and 1.5mg/kg. Which strength was your dog on?

Veronicat · 06/05/2018 07:18

Look for a vets4pets. They will be open and will be able to give you a repeat prescription.

Veronicat · 06/05/2018 07:19

Is it Loxicom for cats you have? The strengths are different.

noitsnotteatimeyet · 06/05/2018 07:56

He’s on 1.5mg and yes it’s loxicom for cats

Are you good at maths?
Cat loxicom is 0.5mg/ml. Dog Loxicom is 1.5mg/ml. For a dog on a maintenance dose, dog loxicom is 0.1mg/ml per kg of bodyweight. Cat maintenance is 0.05 mg per kg of bodyweight.

I don't know your dogs body weight but you can work out a dose from that.

Sorry to hijack, but would it work the other way round? Eg Can I give my cat the dogs Metacam? (Baring in mind the different strength?)

noitsnotteatimeyet · 07/05/2018 14:15

If you can work out the maths parklives I’d assume so ...

We’ve decided to hang on until we can get to our normal vet tomorrow
