New to keeping a dog. It's my daughters and both of them moved back in yesterday. That's fine (ish) we have a big garden for her to run about in. She's a whippet cross. The old owner apparently got her jabbed but we have no proof of this , so the following questions.

Should I get her re jabbed?
When to get her spayed?
Worming
Flea treatment
Registering her at the vets, how much should I get her insured?

She's a beautiful dog and I want to do what's right with her. She has company all day. The old owner just left her in a back yard. She loves to snuggle and have belly rubs and has a grin on her face like she's laughing. She follows me around the house, is this normal, it's like she doesn't want to miss out on doing the washing up! Sorry for all the questions.

He just gave her back! Got her back here with a bit of rope tied to her collar. She's skinny but in good health. Off to buy limited supplies until shops open.
How much should I feed her ? Last time it was 3 small meals a day

Until she is used to food if you think she has been underfed I would feed her often throughout the day. For example if you feed from 7am to 5pm split the quantity into 10 and feed hourly. Then tomorrow split into 5 and feed every two hour etc until you get back to three meals a day and her stomach can handle it.

Do you know why he decided to return her? My worry is he will try to take her again when you have spent money on feeding, vet care etc. Maybe get some advice on ensuring everything is watertight that you are now the official owner.

The daughter and her bf went round last night. Took her. He didn't care. He said he is mine, not my daughter. He's being evicted. Doesn't want her. Ive already updated her chip from lost to found.
Solicitors last time said under the goods act she is mine.
She's landed on her paws . Never going out of my sight again. She follows me so attachment issues. Settled in fine. Like she's never been away. I am in love.

So tired after today. A good run out in the forest, followed by a roast dinner.

Bad nights sleep last night. Think she was left to her own devices, I need to sleep train ( if that's a thing)
Also need a jumper for her, quick. She's that skinny she actually feels cold. I got her a cheap coat to wear until I get something better for her.
She's got so many bad habits again, very clingy and protective of me.
Got the vets later for a health check and nail clip. She sounds like a tap dancer. Also what can I do for dry skin? It's like she has dandruff. Her coat is glossy black.

Salmon oil in her food - worked wonders for ours.

Congratulations on getting her back, fantastic news!

Anything with fish in makes her fart. Really bad 🤢 she can clear a room.
Big walk this morning. Tried her off the lead and she was fab. Her recall, came back every time. Played with other dogs. Now asleep

Clean bill of health at vets! Eyes, ears etc clean. Clear lungs. Feed little and often. He thinks dry skin is down to diet and should improve. Under weight which we knew. Got her worming tablet . Boosters not due until March. She started to get distressed so didn't get nails done today. He said they aren't too over grown. Getting spayed in the summer. She will be 2.

Did she have a season whilst she was still with you previously? If not I'd be tempted to sort out getting her spayed sooner rather than later. Although vets do prefer to do it mid way between seasons it can be done any time.

Call me paranoid but given he's suddenly decided to dump her back on you out of the blue I'd not want to adopt a wait and see approach if there's a chance she's had a season whilst in his "care".

The all important question... What's her name? Smile

He wants her to put weight back in first. She's just 12.3 kg . Spine and hips jutting out ☹️

Her name is Florence, flo for short. She's snuggled on the sofa with me now. Fast asleep.

Think she's having a season now??? Her foof is swollen. Is that a sign or normal in female dogs?

Ahh, perfect! Really suits her (and I'm guessing from 'foof' you're in Wales, could almost come and kidnap her Grin) But yes, swollen foof means she's probably about to come into season.

My friend who takes in rescues has given me some protein mix for her, to help the weight gain.
3 walks today.
I'm at work tomorrow but daughter is coming at 9 to look after her. We have a set up.
I'm knackered

Morning. Better night. She only woke up once to go to the loo. Wondering how Flo ended up with the goose down duvet, I ended up with a fleece Hmm
Sorry this is turning into a diary. Off to work. Think she remembers the uniform , she's looking at me with sad eyes

Just read the thread and I'm so delighted you got her back OP. I was tearful reading about her being taken, I know how distraught I'd be if anyone took DHound!
She looks so happy snuggled up there Smile

Not sure if I should be worried. Been to work today. She's had company & walks.
She's either calmed down or unsettled.
She's picked at her food. Sleeping. Still running about barking at the trees . Could it be a stress thing for her? She's had a lot go on in the last 2 days.
Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. The vet wasn't concerned with her yesterday. But she's had her world turned up side down. I am trying to give her space. Suggestions appreciated .

drinks sounds like you've just got to give it time. Ours was a manic, needy pest for the first couple of weeks. Basically just lots of walks, as much routine as possible, and minimising get further disruption where you can. There are also lots of stress remedies out there, like DAP diffusers etc, and Pets at Home stock a 'calming' tinned dog food with chamomile in it which knocks ours right out!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 03/01/2019 21:06

I'm not surprised if shes showing signs of stress. A lot has happened and she needs some time to decompress.

Have you come across Adaptil? We use the plug in and it does take the edge off things for anxious DDog. I know when it's run out because DDog's behaviour changes.

I will look at getting a diffuser. It must be mind blowing for her what she's gone through.
Thank you
