New to keeping a dog. It's my daughters and both of them moved back in yesterday. That's fine (ish) we have a big garden for her to run about in. She's a whippet cross. The old owner apparently got her jabbed but we have no proof of this , so the following questions.

Should I get her re jabbed?
When to get her spayed?
Worming
Flea treatment
Registering her at the vets, how much should I get her insured?

She's a beautiful dog and I want to do what's right with her. She has company all day. The old owner just left her in a back yard. She loves to snuggle and have belly rubs and has a grin on her face like she's laughing. She follows me around the house, is this normal, it's like she doesn't want to miss out on doing the washing up! Sorry for all the questions.

Could I get her back based on the chip?

Just been Googling legal stuff. Dog is a 'property', it has been stolen from you. you can show you have maintained your 'property' via vets etc. What did you do to reregister it in your name? Speak to your vet - he may have suggestions but the police may have a way forward for you also.

I transferred the chip to our address as she was registered about 40 miles away. The town she was born.
Registered her at the vets.
Registered her for insurance.
I have a folder of documents for her, vet bills etc.

I've spoken to the vet. They have informed me that as the chip is registered to our address. She's classed as stolen and that she is our dog. They said the police and the rspca will should work together to get her back. I've also got a solicitor to speak to on Monday morning. Also to get in touch with the chip company and inform them she is stolen.

Update for any poor sod that goes through this.

Just spoken to a solicitor, look up TORTS ( interference of goods) act 1977.

You can not give something away and then claim it back, this covers animals, TVs, cars etc.

As the dog was given to me, she's mine. As she was chipped to my address , she's mine. As I had her registered at a vets, she's mine.

So I've been instructed to write him a letter, stating the act, stating what I have done for dog and give a deadline for returning her or it goes to court. He said the majority of cases like this the dog is returned, and he will have to pay costs.

I have reported her missing to petlog and all vets within a 30 mile radius will now know she's missing. But if he couldn't be arsed doing simple things like working or flea treatment, I doubt he would take her to a vets.

We are now tracking him down. I will get my dog back

So sorry to hear. This happened to us, and I know, it's really distressing SadAngry
I had to let go....as the country I'm in doesn't have robust laws about this. It seems you have a clear way forward and most likely the backing of the police and rspca. I know its hard, but try to stay calm and focus on your dog coming home. Try to park any anger you have against that twat the previous owner. Gather up all your evidence (photos, vet bills, vacc record in your name, chip detsils). Good luck, and update us!

So we can't track him down. Tried stalking finding him on Facebook. Nothing. No one seems to know or will tell us where he lives. Tried different avenues, police don't want to know - very unhelpful - I feel like we have let her down 😔
Daughter wants to get our very own , from scratch dog. But I don't want to look like a yo-yo dog owner, but I miss having a dog here. There are so many that need a new home. What should I do?

I got another one. It's devastating. But when you've done all you can, you shouldn't beat yourself up or just stay angry. I'm so sorry it's happened to you. For us, getting our very own, from scratch dog has been amazing. We still think of the one who was taken, but focusing on the one we have helps.

You are not a yo-yo dog owner. You have done everything you can, he was clearly a cf who decided to let someone else pay for vet care and then demand his dog back. Who knows how many times he has done this.

I would look at rescues OP as clearly there is a doggie shaped hole in your life and you could give another dog a very good home.

Thank you, there is an animal
Sanctuary near us, has a lot of cats and dogs. Looking at rehoming sites, dogs trust, blue cross etc. It seems staffies are no longer the cool choice of dog. So many dumped. It will be the 'handbag' dogs next. We are contacting the sanctuary today.

The dog has been found. But the old owner won't give her back. She's lost all of her weight. Got fleas etc. Daughter managed to gain entry to the house on the pretence. Dog doesn't get walked, no bedding. Dog was scratching and had a dry nose. Furniture chewed up as she is bored. He has accused us of stealing her. The house has no electricity and he's back dealing. Will the rspca help? Police not interested.

Can you not continue with the avenue you were advised by a solicitor?
Or to be honest, just take her back? If no one helped you when he took her, they aren't going to be interested in helping him if you take her back, especially if the chip is in your name.

Rspca said to get the address, call them back and they will take it from there. He's a drug dealing idiot. I don't really want to go wading in and taking the dog. I want to try to do this properly first. I'm happy that she's been found it's just the civil technicalities now. It's not just the dogs safety it's mine as well as I don't know how stable this lad is.

Rspca have been in touch. She's gone. He's possibly given her away. So waiting game to see if she's ever taken to a vets and her chip will flag up as missing. It's my own fault for not just barging in and taking her but I didn't know how stable he was. I'm an idiot.
