Dog running into people

Hi I have a black lab and he keeps running into people, which is not only worrying but bloody embarrassing. He knocked my brother over today, ran 100 miles at him to greet him and ploughed straight into him. Anyone got any tips on this? He is 2 years old. He's also humping a lot even though castrated early last year.

What's his eyesight like generally? I know he is young but that would be first thing I would look at (not a pun )

If his eyesight is ok, I guess you need to work on commands and recall. Shouldn't be too difficult with a lab

Thanks for advice. Think I'll get his eyesight checked, seems ok with things around the house but maybe it's not so good long distance. His recall is pretty good (greedy 🐷 Lol) but when humping or running to greet someone I have no chance!! He can be a bit of a bull around the house, thinks nothing of knocking in to you or barging you to get out the door first so could be eyesight or just plain rude!

Mine did this recently - ran into some poor man's lower legs when she was romping around with his dog - she was looking the other way as she ran into him. Luckily, didn't knock him over, just got him a bit muddy. It certainly is very embarrassing - I feel for you!

Just to clarify - you are not allowing this to happen to strangers are you? As he would legally be classed as a dangerously out of control dog, regardless of him doing it in an over friendly way.

He must be on a lead or long line in public if you can't recall him when he does this.

Sounds like you need to do a lot more training on his manners if he's pushing people out the way and running into people.

A 'pretty good' recall also sounds as if it needs work.

What training have you done? Time for some obedience classes?
Mine is trained to stand and wait when told so that runners can go past etc.

He does sound rude. And overexcited! How much exercise? How often?

He is young and very friendly and was greeting my brother who he loves, he is not doing this to random strangers. I will get his eyesight checked first but yes he probably does need more training to gain more spacial awareness which I know is common in labs. They love to play around your legs which is annoying. He gets enough exercise, he was recently out of action for a month after a cut pad and handled the lack of exercise amazingly. It really is only when he sees someone he knows so maybe the key is to put him on the extendable lead in these situations. He is a big clumsy boy but very trainable, we've done lots with him at home. Want to meet up in a huge field with my dalmation? we can stand in the middle while they tire themselves out. Either go to dog training or get a private trainer neither worked for my dog, he’s now nine and is as boisterous as ever.

A longline on a harness would be better than an expandable lead. You also need to actively reach how he should greet people.

That's ok then. Use a long line to stop him charging full pelt at people he knows and get the family members he is doing it to, to 100% ignore dog until dog sits calmly. It should stop fairly quickly if it gets him zero attention.

Also hope you don't think I was being nasty asking if he was doing it to strangers, I just wasn't clear if it was or not from the op.

You wouldn't believe the number of people who seem to think as long as dog is just being friendly, it's ok if they charge at strangers and don't realise the dangerous dogs laws do apply to a "just being friendly" dog.

Where I used to live their was a massive (obviously) Great Dane that used to come to the park.

When still young but fully grown he shot across the park smack into the back of a women who was standing talking to someone. Of course she wasn't expecting it and she ended up on the ground having been knocked flying.

Her back was painful for several weeks afterwards. He didn't mean any harm, he loved everyone, but a with a big boisterous dog it's like having a fully grown adult bang into you at full pelt.
