I lost my 14 year old boy on Monday. I miss him so much. How do people get over this?

So so sorry. Some people get over it by getting a new animal, others don't want to as it will spoil their memories of their pet. Keep thinking about all the good memories you have.

I don't think it's something you'll ever get over, sadly. You'll learn to live with it, and hopefully remember the lovely times, but you'll never get over it.

My condolences for your tragic loss.

It hurts like hell. I lost one of my dogs just before Xmas. I still miss her now, but it's not such an acute hurt as it was. Time is healing. I'd do anything to have her back, but I can look at photos with an aww rather than a tear.

As people said, treasure your memories as much as you can.

So sorry to read this, I have just had to say goodbye to my very nearly 14yo spaniel today. There is a massive hole in our family now and i’m not sure how to cope at moment. Other than lots of cuddles with our other cocker it’s all a bit unknown.

Oh OP, I am so sorry for you . It's just so bloody hard when they go - no matter when it happens it is far, far too soon.

I am not sure anyone who loves and loses a dog ever gets over it. If I sat and thought about them, I could cry for my dogs that have been dead for years. However, I also think "good for you, dog" for still being remembered and mourned so long after you're gone; many humans don't get that. (Raises a glass to all the good dogs)

Thank you all. This time last week I had no idea it’d be my last day with him. I miss him so much. I’d had him since he was six weeks old.

@Catinthecorner, my office is based at a veterinary surgery (job is animal related but not to do with the vet surgery itself) so I get my dog fix. Might consider volunteering at the weekends though. Miss the walks.
