Where are all the poodles?

I regularly see many 'poo' type dogs around especially cockapoos and labradoodles but I rarely see actual poodles. These mixes are coming from somewhere!

Puppy farms.

Unfortunately probably sat in a puppy farm churning out cockapoo, westiepoos, labradoodles, whateverthehellapoos!

Yeah, cooped up in pens pumping out mongrals for people with more money than sense probably.

And people fall for these so called 'designer' dogs. Mongrels all of them!

Another vote for many being kept in a box, producing litter after litter of whatsitpoos...

I thought that would be the case with some of them but there is such a huge amount of these mixes. 3 cockerpoos in my training class last week. A cavapoo and 2 more cockerpoos on my walk just today. They have overtaken all the labs i used to meet.

I want to assume that people are not that stupid.

They are that stupid. Nearly 8 out of 10 puppies sold in this country are from puppy farms.

I have one! A Standard and my friend has a miniature. She used to also have a Standard until he died.
My neighbour has a toy poodle.
Saw a beautiful silver Standard last summer in the next village so there are some around.

I regularly get asked if mine is a labradoodle but she looks nothing like one!

I do know a lot of people with completely crazy cockerpoos and labradoodles though. I wouldn’t personally have one, much prefer a full Poodle 🐩

If there’s a lot locally there’s every chance they’re all related... easiest way to make the most money is to have a load of bitches and a male poodle, you don’t need to pay much attention then as they’ll all be whatever the bitch is oddles.

A actual bona fide poodle is a much more predictable entity. In terms of grooming and training and temperament and health etc.
I don't dislike crosses but you have to be prepared to get the worst of both. And designer crosses? Bred by people to make money and rarely health tests on parents.

This is a question more people should be asking

I know one standard poodle and she is fabulous, a real dog person's type of dog.

Well, no... nobody’s farming anything that won’t make money, certain breeds, sure and poodle crosses are attractive because it’s easy to breed them and they cost more than either pedigree breed will get.

Someone told me she is going to get a pedigree cavapoo, I asked her how as they aren’t a breed...

My friend’s assistance dog is a poodle - she is the loveliest, most sweet-natured and intelligent dog I’ve ever met.

A woman down my road has three standard poodles - all apricot.

We have a gorgeous toy poodle (who is a little bigger than the toy range!) bought from a household with 3 adult dogs (2 poodles and 1 rescue) - saw both (lovely) parents and healthy little puppies. Seller asked us to consider using her for holiday cover if we ever went on holiday instead of kennels (we’ve moved out of the area but use family if we need dog looking after).
In laws also have a lovely toy poodle (quite a bit smaller than ours). Neither will be used for breeding though.
I do worry about the parents of all these little puppies!

I have two. If they are overdue for clipping, people quite often ask me if they are cockerpoos ...
Nothing against doodles, except the horror of where almost all of them come from. My poodle breeder was a hobby breeder who gave me the third degree before letting me have one, taught me how to clip them, and still exchanges Christmas cards with me 11 years later. If I ruled the world there would be no other sort.

Puppy farmers breed all breeds. It's ridiculous to suggest only poodle crosses are from puppy farms and even worse to suggest that ALL poodle crosses are from puppy farms....

If someone wants to pay over the odds for a crossreed that's their decision. Better than paying well over the odds for a squashed face dog that has problems breathing all through it's life.

BTW it's just as easy to breed spaniels, poodles, Labradors and every other "proper" breed 🙄 All puppies are made the same way 😂

My breed isn't easy. Parents need heart testing. They man even need a c section. And then puppies have to be liver shunt tested and fed carefully to avoid issues. As a giant breed mum can't be left alone with tiny puppies.
Puppy farmers breed ALL breeds. That's true.
I can't believe there's such a thing as a decent poodle cross breeder. Good breeders breed because they want a job to do a particular job or because they want to improve the breed. Not the case in a cockerpoo or labradoodle. But could be the case in working sprockers for instance.

A quick look on any of the free ad sites strongly suggests this to me I'm afraid.

No they don’t, there’s a whole load of breeds that are nowhere near numerous enough to be farmed and a whole load that aren’t popular enough to bother breeding on a large scale, a load where they can’t charge enough to warrant breeding them and larger breeds cost more to keep so less profit in them as well.

Of course it’s not only poodle crosses, small popular pedigrees are attractive to them too.

But it’s a lot easier to breed crosses because you’re not having to pay attention to who is breeding with who, you don’t need both sexes of the same breed... so that weights it a fair bit.

So with certain breeds and poodle crosses a hell of a lot of them are coming from puppy farms.

Of course it’s not, you’ve got breeds that need human intervention to mate and give birth. (Which yes is ridiculous, but they’re not all equally easy) and giant breeds that are too big to leave with tiny puppies... not much profit if a load of them die.

So yes, some breeds and crosses are way way more likely to come from puppy farms than others.

Take a look at pets4homes. Plenty of puppy farmers on there. They deal with lots of different breeds.

I'm pretty sure if a breeder wants to produce a cockapoo they will mate a cocker and a poodle. Same for cavachons - cavalier spaniel and bichon. And so on.... They don't throw a mix of breeds in to mate and hope for the best!

So by your reckoning great Danes, st Bernards and all other large breeds can't have puppies then? In case mother squashes them?

Some dogs may well needs human intervention to mate. The dogs I've seen chasing after bitches in heat don't seem to have a problem.

This thread is really about how ridiculous people are who buy Cross breeds isn't it?

Everyone has a choice. Nobody is making anybody buy or rehome a dog they don't like.

My son has lurchers - another cross breed. Is he "ridiculous" in your opinion or is it just the cross poo owners can hold that title?

Great Danes were popular a few years ago , and don't forget the Dalmatian craze. I see more weimaraner and vislas around here at the moment.

Puppy farmers will breed whatever the latest breed craze is. At the moment it seems poo crosses are the 'in' dogs. That will change in due course.

Lots of different breeds are advertised on the free sites. It's because people buy cute puppies and find out they haven't a clue what their doing. Within a few months they want rid. All breeds!

Our local rescue centre has lots of staffies, Collies, pugs and Jrts in now. I went last week. Not a poo cross or Labrador in sight.
