Has anyone never left their dog at home alone?

My ddog has never been left at home alone. Not once. My family set up has meant that he's just never had to be in that situation. Obviously, this has worked against us as he now hates being left alone. These days whenever I can't have him with me he's looked after by a close family member. Just wondered how common this is.

(I am trying to improve this but I'm easing him in slowly)

Very rarely. Do you need to start leaving him?
I would do short bursts, gradually working up. Smile

Mine is rarely on his own but he has been on his own quite a lot too. He hates it I’m sure as he’s a very clingy dog but needs must and we have to go out. Luckily he doesn’t chew or destroy things when he’s alone.

Our dog has never been left alone, he's nearly 2. I don't work and we have three adult sons living at home so it has never been necessary. Plus stories of pet theft from homes terrify me!

All dogs hate being alone. I haven’t left mine often, she is four and probably has been left a handful of times, for two hours max. She has been left alone in the car more often, again not for long.

We deliberately built up the time Eric was left when he was a pup so he was comfortable with being left three to four hours. Now, with different circumstances at age four he is rarely left alone but we do deliberately leave him alone now and again just so that he retains the ability to be left.

@RickOShay No there's always someone with him during the day, it would just be nice and less restrictive to have the odd couple hours here and there where we don't have to make arrangements in advance.

I try to avoid if I can. He comes to work with me, but I live alone so there are obviously occasions that he needs to be. Anything over four hours and I will make arrangements for him to go to my mums.

If your doggy is below 1 year or just 1 year it's not appropriate to leave him alone as many time when left alone they tend to be depressed.....If u want I can share some tips which might help what i did when I went out but make sure he is not alone for long time

Grasslands · 30/04/2018 03:15

i don't understand? for how long? you've never gone to the shop for an hour or two and left the dog? the whole family gone to the airport to pick someone up or even been outside the house chatting to a neighbor for 45 minutes?
we do...dinners out etc. we try to limit it to under 4 hours.
start with short periods, leave his fave toys available.

My dog has never been left alone - like you my working life means it’s jist not happened And I’ll be honest and say I’m not a little worried about it

Max 1-2hrs alone every few months. Usually left at parents for baby sitting lol
