How much do new puppies sleep?

Puppy arrived on Friday last week.

Yesterday she was quite sleepy but was then quite sick and her poo's were squitty. We then realised the food the breeder had sent her home with was an adult mix and every time she's out in the garden she tries to eat goodness knows what.

We phoned the emergency vet and explained they suggested chicken and water to settle her tum (so the rest of our Sunday dinner has now gone) and boy did she woof it down. Today she's had more chicken and I mixed it with Canagan which is the food I want her to have and is looking much much better.

She's still very sleepy through and has spend much of today napping. Should I be worried.

The local dog rehoming centre was very grateful for the food the breeder sent.

When mine were puppies they slept loads but as soon as they were awake they were wide awake if you get what I mean.

There's a difference between lethargic and sleeping lots. Puppies should be mental then sleep.

How old is the puppy? Was it definitely vaccinated, especially against parvo? Was the breeder reputable and/or registered?

Personally I'd be taking her into a vet ASAP, you should have taken her in anyway to have a standard health check and to get her used to the vet.
Puppies do sleep but they have bursts of energy too.

They tend to be either wide awake or asleep so deeply that you can’t wake them.

Puppies usually hopefully 😁 sleep a lot, like babies and then wake up like crazy little things once they've settled in.
You only got her on Friday, she's been given the wrong food for a couple of days, had an upset tummy and if she came from a litter will be missing her Mum and siblings.
She needs time to settle in, let her sleep, if you have children, (not sure if you do) teach them to leave her alone when she's tired.
Give it another few days, to settle with the food and if she seems listless, when she's awake maybe get the vet to check her out.
But I bet she's just settling in.

She is 8 1/2 weeks and has had first set of jabs there was lots of mention of KC registered on the advert but I must admit I didn't check. She has been registered with the vet and went up for a visit to chose her collar and lead but hasn't actually seen the vet yet she's booked in for her next jab in 2 weeks.

She has had spurts of energy today but is mostly sleepy. She's happily playing with her duck now. She's certainly not listless just seems quite tired today

Healthy very small puppies are either "on" or "off". Elfpup would be active for about half an hour at a time and then crash out for a couple of hours

She's still settling in. If she's eating and drinking and the poo is firming up with the chicken Canagan (that's the brand I use too) I wouldn't be too worried. Keep a close eye on her though and if you are worried then speak to your vet.

Part of my contract with the breeder was that I had to have him checked by my own vet within 7 days if I needed to return him for health reasons. It would be worth booking her a check up sooner rather than later just for your own peace of mind.

I'm think I'm going to wait until tomorrow for the poo to firm up before worrying about that too much, its squitty today but its less than 24 hours since I effectively changed her diet completely.

Almost the second I pressed send on the original post she woke up and we've had a game of football in the garden and now she's trying to move a blanket that I put over the telephone wire to stop her chewing it.

I am surprised my vet didn't want to do a check, they've got a double appointment booked in when we have the jabs.

Ah she sounds fine then. There's generally not much wrong with a puppy who wants to play ball and then finds some mischief to get into!

It must have been her food in then! Just keep mixing in her new food and she should continue to be okay :) It could also be her vaccinations too, the breed I am looking into can be made ill if vaccinations and worming are done at the same time.

Thank you all for your advise, its always a bit scary bringing home new puppy. She's just had a good half hour play, no form at all to her poo but much brighter now. Thank you all so much

Yes puppies sleep lots like a newborn baby but should be super energetic when awake.

Her diet has been changed too quickly and will cause runs for a few days. Her initial runny poo was probably from the stress of new home rather than her food (from 6weeks puppies can have lots of the adult dog foods available in the shops). Puppy specific food isn't necessarily needed - it's more a case of higher protein percentage to help growth with a smaller amount of food, rather than there being a massive difference. My second pup was swapped onto an adult food from 3months old (it was easier to have both dogs on the same food) - the packet or sometimes only the manufacturers website will have how many grams are needed for puppies of various weights/ages on each type of the 'adult' food.

Its only the parents that are KC registered not her as she's a golden border retriever (cross breed) the price was reflected in that so not pedigree level money. I don't think we were ripped off, I'm just surprised the breeder sent adult food.

Much more energy this morning, although having a nap now. There was liquid poo on her puppy pad this morning like we had yesterday but the poo when she was in the garden this morning was still very loose but starting to have more form to it.

Thank you again everyone for your replies they have been really reassuring. I'm much more used to cats.

Thank you Knockknock she's doing fine.

She was very sleepy yesterday, I think the heat had a lot to do with that, her poo is still bit sloppy but we have been to the vet and she was perfectly happy with her.

She's being a little whatsit today has just run past with a pair of my socks (I thought retrievers were supposed to have an advanced sense of smell)
