My dog has been whining for 3 days.

So I have had this god for around 3 years now and havent had this issue before, the issue is that he has continuously for the past three days. No matter what we do he just keeps whining. We have tried giving him more food and water but that didnt work. 3 days ago we took him out for 6 walks and as soon as we got home he started whining again. He will whine from the time it gets light until the time everyone heads to bed... There are people in my house that are awake until 3-4am. We have tried playing with him and giving him affection but for some reason he isnt wanting to play which is really unusual for him. Today he hasnt eaten anything yet so I am getting a little concerned about that. He is keeping everyone awake all night with his whining, this includes my upstairs neighbors too. I think I have gotten maybe 10 hours of sleep in three days... Im the kind of guy that likes 10 hours a night but that just isnt happening right now. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

You should take him to the vet. Something is wrong and he's trying to tell you. He may well be in pain.

Take him to the vet for a check up, make sure he’s not in any pain.

I'm sorry your dog isn't happy or behaving as normal. I would take it to the vet to be checked over

Oh and my dog will 'rally' for things such as walks even though in hindsight he wasn't well at that time and only shows pain/discomfort when he's at home.

I would phone the vet up ASAP and tell them he's been whining for days and is off his food.

He's continuously whining and not playing and this is a sudden change in behaviour which has persisted for three days? Short of your dog learning to talk and tell you he needs to see a vet, I can't actually think of what else he can do.

Thanks for the advice. The reason why I didn`t take him to see a vet sooner is that the rest of my family was claiming that it was something to do with the full moon. I figured I would wait a few days to see if he would get any better just in case that was the issue. Today is the third day which is why I made this post to see if there could be other issues and get other peoples advice. As soon as I saw the first few people saying take him to the vets I did there and then. Seems he has a high temperature and may be in a bit of pain. He had an injection for both the fever and pain.

We havent had him for the whole 3 years, we got him 4 months ago. Nether the less a lot of people in my family had told me it could be because of the moon so I waited 2 days to see if they were wrong. I wasnt in town until the vets were closed yesterday which is why I chose to post this today to see if anyone had any advice on the matter. Like I said as soon as I saw people say take him to the vets I was right on the phone. I wasn`t trying to hurt my dog or anything like that I was just going off what I was told by 6 other family members at the time because for all I knew they may have been right. The plan was to get him to the vets today but I figured I would see if there was any truth to there claims or not. Seems to be doing better after the visit to the vets so now I know that their claims were indeed false.

This is the first time owning my own dog so yes I went off of what other people with more experience owning dogs had to say. Was I wrong to listen to them? Maybe.

Just as a hint, if those 6 people ever give you advice on...well anything, do the opposite...

Also, he’s definitely not a werewolf, not matter how long you’ve had him.

I hope he’s feeling better soon like, but the full moon is just completely batshit crazy as a reason a dog might be crying.

@tabulahrasa I laughed at your werewolf comment a lot more than I should've lol.

@JasonWaugh I'm glad you took him to the vets, next time though, if your dog is acting out of character in any way I'd seek advice from vets! Wonder if it's your house he doesn't like?! Could he be missing previous family/ animals? (Assuming he's not a new puppy)?

@Kate123cl He had a hard time getting used to my house for the first week and a half of him being here but we have done a lot to make him feel at home here. His previous owner didn`t have the time for him anymore because of new additions to there family. I think he has just about settled down here now.

It's not a completely nuts theory. I have known several dogs that get very restless/act out of sorts when it's windy, stormy etc maybe it's atmospheric or something. The moon also affects the tides and people. Always more trouble on a full moon!
But yes always a check up at the vets first whenever an animal acts differently but you know that now

Presumably the vet has advised you to go back if he doesn't settle? 'A temperature and a bit of pain' could be something, or it could be nothing.

I've known dogs be a bit wild at the full moon or a bit 'friskier' than normal but not to whine for three days straight. Some dogs are also more vocal than others but for a dog to suddenly start the behaviour out of the blue would have me at the vet pronto.

@statetrooperstacey Yes he still has his balls right now. Even if there is a bitch in season he has never constantly whined so I don`t think that is the issue. He whines a little where there is a bitch on hear but not nearly as much as he has been.

@Shambolical1 He has an appointment on Saturday if he is still acting the same by then.

The treatment has worked, Max hasn`t whined since we brought him back from seeing the vet. Or at least not more than he normally does. I even managed to get him to eat a little and played with him for a few minutes too. The next time he acts this way I will absolutely take him to the vets straight away.

Well done, so glad he’s on the mend.

As a pp has said, wind does affect dog, horses, often children, makes them restless. But not consistently whiny.

They’re totally not the same as a full moon, that’s noisy and things moving about that aren’t usually...

Even dogs that are properly phobic about storms don’t cry non stop for days.

I know, I was probably a bit full on about how much it’s not at all a sensible theory, but that was actually my toned down version honestly if your dog is crying I can guarantee you, it’s never going to be because it’s a full moon.

A bit freaked out somewhere it’s usualky dark at night on a really clear night, maybe, but not crying.

Anyway, OP, glad he’s feeling better after the vets.
