Raid on rescue centre

I'm gutted to find that the rescue centre I got my puppy from 5 years ago has been raided and all the animals removed. I'm a bit confused as to what had been going on, and also the time line. It's supposed to have been established there for 12 years, but I got my pup from the same people in a different location 5/6 years ago. I'm horrified that I may have inadvertently supported a bad business. So sad for all the animals.

If it was a rescue centre then you would have paid a smallish donation?

But that worries me- I think we paid £300 for a puppy. Older dogs were less. We were told they are rescued from puppy farms in Ireland among other places. The place was really busy the day we were there, probably shifted 20 dogs, easily. When you compare that with other rescues which only have 20-30 dogs in at a time...
If she shipped in dogs from all over the place- Romania, Ireland, and passed them on at that rate, along with fundraising, that's quite an income. I don't know what to think.

I've only ever had older dogs from rescue before.

30-40 dogs a load at £300 a go? Sounds like a pretty lucrative way to make a living :(

"Rescued from puppy farms in Ireland" sounds suspiciously like they were reselling them on a regular basis from Irish puppy farms and then dressing them up as more desirable rescues

picklemepopcorn · 23/03/2018 19:40

Exactly. Exactly. That's my fear. And I fell for it.

The number of dogs she's been moving through is a worry. But the cost of transporting dogs from Romania has to be factored in, and their vax, passport, neutering...

What a disgusting thing to do, no wonder you feel cheated. Try and look at it that you give your puppy a lovely home, I know , it’s a lot of money to pay to the bastards and it’s shit to feel cheated. I hope the remaining dogs get good homes.

Just had a look at the full story, bloody hell, what a state the place was in, poor animals. Is the woman an animal hoarder, or greedy?

picklemepopcorn · 23/03/2018 19:59

I'm not sure. In a way, she could rationalise it as better then Romania. The shelters there are appalling, worse than you can imagine. And in the winter, they have terrible snow.

So maybe she justifies taking hundreds of dogs from there, because the majority of them get safely rehomed eventually even if the conditions are not ideal.

I would like someone in the know about what the problems are to explain. I suppose I'll have to wait for the court case.

To be honest £300 for a "rescue" dog sounds like a lot. It's triple what I've ever paid. Anyway, don't blame yourself, you took on your dog in good faith, I'd wait to see what else comes out, I've not read anything about it so can't really comment.
