Best small breed?

I'm new to The Doghouse, so apologies if this has been covered before, but what's the best small - medium-sized breed for families/young children? We had labradors pre-children, but don't have as much space as we used to...

I have a Bichon Frise (he was 13 weeks yesterday). He is hypoallergenic and non-shedding (but with the current weather the ENTIRE house is covered in small dirty dog paw prints so don't go getting ideas that he is clean to care for!) He is lovely with kids and apparently as a breed they are known for being well natured. He seems to have taken fine to toilet training. He knows his name, sit and recalls ok (for a puppy). He is a bit of a chicken and picky with his food, the breed are known to have delicate tummies and to hate being left alone (he certainly isn't a fan) so no good for you if you are out all day.

Such a wide range of options you're probably best to think what other characteristics you are looking for to narrow it down. We have two border terriers and they have been great with our kids and are awesome little dogs but we've always been terrier people so are potentially a bit biased.

I have a bichon frise he is coming up for 12 still in good health. He is the most adorable loving dog he just now want to snuggle and go for for small walks. He loves his food never been picky. Great with other dogs and loves children. I will miss him madly when he goes but hoping I have a good few years yet.

Border Terrier every time

I have a shih tzu and they are amazing dogs. So loving and friendly. She’s the best thing in my life. Well I do love the kids too

My mini schnauzer is the coolest dog on the planet. Everyone loves him. Beard! Eyebrows! What's not to adore?!

No dog is hypoallergenic!
Consider how much grooming and exercise you are prepared for.
Also puppies and very young children are an awful mix!
