Something in his mouth* not someone!!

marioncole · 08/11/2018 17:31

I actually quite like puppy today 😂

He's 13 weeks now. We've got sit and paw sussed but that's about it. The biting has pretty much stopped. All pooping is outside, weeing is very hit and miss. He's clean and dry all night though from 9pm to 7am which is amazing. The next targets are stay and heel which will make my life so much easier. I have a harness where the lead attaches to the front and he doesn't really pull wearing that one, but with a traditional lead on collar he's a nightmare for pulling.

Fishypieandmash · 08/11/2018 22:03

marion sounds like your puppy is doing really well!
Fishypup can go for a little walk tomorrow for the first time.
Should I give him breakfast before or after the walk?
He usually has it about 7.00 but rarely eats it all.

TiredAndaBitBored · 08/11/2018 22:04

Fishypieandmash I give mine his food before so he does his poo whilst out.

Fishypieandmash · 08/11/2018 22:11

Good plan Tired!

marioncole · 08/11/2018 22:14

I can't get over the idea that your pup doesn't always eat his food @Fishypieandmash 😂 Mine is absolutely obsessed with food. Any food.

Hello

So happy to have found this thread. I have an 11 week old puppy, we’ve had him 3 weeks now.

I feel like the little monkey has just become more confident and better at ignoring me - hahahaha.

He is soo cute but I feel like I spend my entire day just saying no or leave it!

He is currently fast asleep on me snoring his little head off.

Does anyone have what I’ve named the witching hour between rouge 8.45pm to 9.15pm ?? He turns into an absolute demon then. I was also desperate for another dog so the DH is like ummm you wanted this dickhead (as he affectionately calls him).

UnicornPug · 09/11/2018 07:05

Our puppy is 6m old today. He’s cracked toilet training, mostly, in that he is 100% reliable in houses but has been known to poo in pets at home more than once. Confused
He adores one of our cats and she seems relatively fond of him- occasional nuzzles and doesn’t run away unless he tries to hump her! The other cat just avoids him like the plague.

He has been great off lead but he’s suddenly being a toad. He wants to play with all dogs he sees and completely ignores any cues they are giving off. It used to be that he’d be running about and I’d spy a dog in the distance, so I’d call him back, treat him and pop him on the lead until we got closer and could either walk by or have a little meet and greet or a play. He’s got wise to me though and now when I call him back he looks round to see what I’ve seen that he hasn’t then shoots off like a rocket. So we are back on lead for the forseeable! Any ideas on how to get him to recall again? He’ll do it if there is no other dog about!

He loves me best and I’m so glad we got him. Can’t imagine being without him now!

fizzledays · 09/11/2018 07:40

@Fishypieandmash what breed is your pup? Need to be careful of bloat taking them out for exercise too soon after eating...we have a German Shepherd pup and have been told by several people to wait at least an hour! Bit of a pain some days but better for them I think...

Fishypieandmash · 09/11/2018 08:08

fizzle he’s a cockapoo. I gave him breakfast about 7.00 (he only had about half, doesn’t seem to have much appetite in the mornings) and we had a short walk about 7.20. He’s now fast asleep. I’ve heard about bloat, but this is my first dog and I wasn’t sure what to do.

Fishypieandmash · 09/11/2018 08:09

unicorn I’d like to get mine off the lead as soon as poss but it’s a bit daunting isn’t it? Need to wait for his recall to get better.

fizzledays · 09/11/2018 08:37

@Fishypieandmash I'd never heard of it until we got our pup in September - we had a family
Labrador growing up and it never seemed to be much of a concern although he was always walked mid morning and fed early (coincidence more than anything). I'd maybe walk then feed to be safe if mornings are a rush or anything? Just going on what I've heard! I'm about to take pup out (8:45ish) and he was fed just after 7. I think it's more a prob for bigger breeds especially GSD x

karala · 09/11/2018 09:25

karalapup is now doing 4 hours overnight so only getting up once which is amazing. She has also stopped crying every time I leave the room.
Starlighting my pup has mad times which I notice tends to be followed by a poo. She starts running around and growling and looking slightly demonic and generally speaking a poo will follow although sometimes she's so loony she can't actually stop to deal with it.

PinkFlamingo888 · 09/11/2018 12:58

Hello, we picked our 8 week old puppy yesterday (3/4 GSD 1/4 Border Collie) he is amazing and has even done his 2 most recent poos outside but we just can’t convince him to wee. Everything we’ve seen says puppies have tiny bladders but he last weed at 5:30 when he woke us up this morning. We take him outside and just stand there trying to not give him any distractions but he ends up just falling asleep at my feet. Does anyone have any top tips please? My boyfriend resorted to showing him YouTube videos of other dogs weeing but that was as useful as you’d imagine!

PinkFlamingo888 · 09/11/2018 13:19

HE DID IT!! He just woke up and I took him out and he did a wee straight away. So lots and lots of praise for him! There was a lot so I think he must have been holding for quite a while but hopefully he will knows it’s good to wee now that I’ve been able to praise him properly for it.

GColdtimer · 09/11/2018 14:02

Goodness pink, well done! @karala how do you tell the difference between an "I'm lonely" and a "I need a wee" cry at night?

We have had our puppy 4 days and I have been sleeping in the living room. Last night he settled without fuss and woke up st 5.30. A wee and straight back but when I went to the loo he cried. I don't know how to get back to my own bed. I do t want to misread his cues!

Ginslinger · 09/11/2018 14:47

two falls - she doesn't cry - I set my clock to come down and wake her for a wee - I have been stretching the time from 2.5 hours to 4 hours now.

Ginslinger · 09/11/2018 14:48

i am having epic name change fails Hmm Grin

UnicornPug · 09/11/2018 15:34

Just realised I hadn't shared a picture of my gorgeous boy. He's lhasa apso/ bicheon frise. And he really doesn't shed at all!

He’s lovely unicorn!

How are people getting on with leaving their puppies while they go out?

I’ve just popped to the shops, out about 25 minutes and left him in a crate. He had yummy treats (a Kong and a lickey mat) a hot water bottle and Classic FM on the radio.
I have a camera and could see/hear that he finished his treats within about 5 minutes and then started barking.
I’m now back, in the lounge and waiting for him to stop or fall asleep before I go in.

LittleMissIvy · 10/11/2018 19:47

I am so relieved by your post, that it's possible our (9ks now)pup will sleep through the night at 10 weeks. I'm exhausted running round after her all day and up at night too. The puppy books say you should get up at 3am to let her out for a pee - all she does is want to play and im really not in the mood...

Autumn2018 · 11/11/2018 00:23

I gave up letting out at night as I was always too late, and couldn't commit to months on end of waking every 2 hours during the night. So, although I knew it may take longer, I covered the floor and cleaned it up in the morning.

She's now just turned 16 weeks old and we've had 3 or 4 completely clean nights now. Normally we have just one wee overnight and have only had one or two accidents to mop up all week during the day. So it's all improving nicely! I still wouldn't dare take her to anyone's home for a visit though, not just because of the weeing but also the chewing!

PinkFlamingo888 · 11/11/2018 01:07

Here’s pup! He’s on his 3rd night with us. Night one he slept on the kitchen floor, he had a nice comfy bed but decided against using it. Last night he was in his crate all night. He weed in there early on but once bedding was replaced he wasn’t too bad. Woke up about 4 times and each time we took him outside for toilet and then back in the crate where we lay with him until he fell asleep. This evening though boyfriend has decided that after taking him to the toilet we should let him cry it out in the crate. Any top tips? Is this a stupid idea and should I feel as mean as I do or is this better in the long run? I’m desperate for sleep but don’t want to just take the easy route if it’s not the best route.

Well feeling slightly proud of my demon - he goes into the crate with our older dog around 9.30 and 10.30pm depending on when we go to bed and sleeps through to at least 6.00am. We stopped the night pees at least a week ago (he is 12 weeks now).

He is almost house trained (maybe one accident every other day), I think because the breeder never used puppy pads it’s really helped his training. I take him out every two hours and almost straight after his food for a poop.

He is also get much better at being left, doesn’t cry the house down like he is being tortured when I’m in the shower. We are starting to slowly leave him for maybe an hour once every few days. We leave both dogs in our hallway with the play crate as the barrier into the living room (we have a very open planned house) Starting to feel like my life is returning!

@UnicornPug I think 6 months is the dreaded stage where they start to want to become dominant again?

karala · 12/11/2018 08:42

hello everyone - I'm coping with the overnights - we're at about every 4 hours now and I've tried extending it but it's not worked. But I'm finding the crying when I leave the room really wearing. I'm working on it by disappearing for a few moments and then coming back but I honestly can't see that this is in any way improving. She'll be 12 weeks on Friday - those of you who had crying pups, did they just magically improve as they got older? Or what? please tell me - advise me.
