Thanks newme175 that's what he has now. His poop is runny still this morning but the bland diet and rice is making some disturbing 💩 🤢.

Have to say he is great through the night 10.30 till 6am and he doesn't shout us we just get up he wee's then straight back robbed till 7.30 when he is starving. He seems to be constantly hungry.

OldEnglishSheepDog · 01/05/2018 11:13

Last night I stayed in my bed ALL night and wasn't woken by whining or barking at all. I did not use earplugs and I have not given away the pup. I just left the crate open. That was it. He was able to wander around the living room and was sat at the bottom of the stairs when we came down at a perfectly respectable 6am. There was no wee anywhere that I could see and he looked calm and rested (must be pretty rested, he's been bonkers this morning, I can't keep up with him).

Anyway, it appears that, while he likes his crate, it is only on his own terms. I can live with that.

OldEnglishSheepDog · 02/05/2018 03:22

Back to normal then. If anyone has any advice at all I would appreciate it. I am broken.

ThisMorningWentBadly · 02/05/2018 06:18

OES. It’s rotten when they won’t sleep, I found/find it soul destroying. You are clearly doing a brilliant job because he wants to be with you.

Things that i’ve found might help - white noise and complete dark. But mostly time, and not giving in.

It will get better, your gorogeus puppy will learn. Some just take longer than others.

Badlypup is five months old and yesterday managed a whole 45 mins on her own n her crate during the day without crying. Some dogs get things quickly, others not. We have done so much work to get to those 45mins.

But no sleep is a awful. I’m sorry you’ve had a rotten night.

Iamblossom · 02/05/2018 07:29

Quick question:

Getting an 8 week old lab ina couple of weeks.

Already have a year old daschund.

After a few weeks am I tending to leave him for an hour to go to the gym, probably in the same room I shut the daschund in.

But what if the lab poos? Am worried the Dax will eat it!! Should I separate them?

geekone · 02/05/2018 09:07

delshwragon giant Schnauzer? I have one just 10 weeks yesterday b

Bedknobsandhoover · 02/05/2018 19:53

Start the way you mean to go on. From the day he arrives leave him at home for a short time every day.
My pup slept with me from his first night and was sleeping all night (six or seven hours) after a week.
Toilet training takes ages for most puppies but is much easier in fine weather.

ThisMorningWentBadly · 03/05/2018 06:23

Badlypup woke at 5 today. I think it something to do with light and birds. I need to see if I can fashion a proper cover for the door so that it stays dark for longer.

😴So tired.

newme175 · 03/05/2018 09:38

I'm seriously never having another puppy ever again..... The reason I got a puppy was that I felt I could mould them into my ideal dog as I've looked after quite a few dogs in my job and naively thought... oh my dog won't do such and such... etc....Well he is running me rugged and was not a blank slate at all....

Also had a bad night here, first it was the cats bring a mouse in, which I had to fish out from under a bed at 1am, this of course woke up the puppy.
But then pup woke up at 4am, after being closer to 6 for a few days now... I ignored as much as poss but then took him for a wee and back to bed.
He was whining on and off when I eventually got up at 6 to feed him and let him into his area in hallway /kitchen, I've gone back to bed (usually stay downstairs from 6am) and while I tried to dose he done a poo, trodden in it and spread it alllllll overrrrr his area, his bed, the floor, one carpeted stair (we have a stair gate but over one step due to the position of the bannister). It's not his fault as he must have had belly ache hence he woke up early, but it was no fun cleaning it all just gone 6.20 am.
Thank god he doesn't have the run of the whole of downstairs!

ThisMorningWentBadly · 03/05/2018 12:18

Badlypup has just spent an hour in her crate during the day on her own without whinging. I’d do a happy dance if I wasn’t so tired.

GinThereDoneThat · 04/05/2018 10:09

Hi everyone Grin this is my little girl who is coming to me on Sunday morning! She is a cocker spaniel x poodle mix with two very lovely parents! She is used to sleeping in a crate so I'm hoping this will work in my favour...

She is Gorgeous @gintheredonethat !

I have some great news to report... very very happy, managed to leave the pup for just over 30 minutes with no crying :) I don't need to leave him for more than 1-2 hours as I work from home but next week I have a school assembly on one day and a prior engagement on another day which I couldn't get out of! I was stressing about leaving him but now I know he willl be fine!

Just a bit of a background this was the puppy who screamed when I left the room to go to another room, screamed when I went upstairs and REALLY screamed when I needed to go outside to the garage... he was so so LOUD and as much as I don't want to cause him distress I was more worried about the neighbours reporting me for animal abuse....

We slowly worked on leaving him in the house, then when I went to the garage/garden and the final step was leaving him home alone. I know he was silent as I was listening to him on the phone, he did start whining a couple of times but I shushed him via the phone.

The way we build it up is by giving him a special treat when I leave, unfortunately these chews have given him an upset tum so I've been only doing it once a day (school pick up time). So it took just over a week, and today we finally cracked it and even went in to the shops
on way home as he was silent.

But....... he did pee on the carpet today, very annoying as he literally ran into the room to wee and quickly ran out when I wasn't looking.... grrrrr

ThisMorningWentBadly · 06/05/2018 16:42

Newme wow! Badlypup was like that it took ages and ages for her to be ok that I had left the room for even a second. But we can now leave her for 1.5hours AND AND we seemed to have solved the early morning yapping. For the last three mornings there hasn’t been any. Yippee.

I never dreamt that we’d actually get to this point with Badlypup.

I can wait to catch up on some much needed sleep.

newme175 · 06/05/2018 16:55

It's funny as just when I think there's a progress in one area it balances out with a set back in another area!
Pup was very badly behaved on his walk this morning, couldn't recall him. And he seems to have loads of confidence so was getting quite far away.... it's very embarrassing as I'm a dog boarder but cant seem to control my own dog! (I don't let the minded dogs of lead though as they are only with me occasionally)
I was recommended a long line before, but I think the problem is deeper as the pup just doesn't listen, the adult dogs I look after listen and behave so much better and seem to respect me! I will leash him for his evening walk..
On the plus side he only had one toilet accident today

Elphame · 06/05/2018 18:52

"Not listening" is very very common (probably the norm!) for pups as they get older and develop their confidence.... Elfpup is just coming out of the stage himself. He's far from perfect but there is a definite improvement over the last few weeks.

I've been using the long line on him - well worth doing. I've also been using a whistle - it seems to get through the selective deafness better than my voice.

I need to go back to basics again, I was very disheartened yesterday (apologies for venting) but feel a lot more determined today... I think I had unrealistic expectations of the pup that's for sure, but also all the reading about puppy training sounds easy enough but putting it into practice not so much haha...
Also we already had 2 accidents today oops, this is after he been for a wee twice! I was literally just about to take him for a poo went upstairs quickly to grab a jumper and he did one and a wee on the floor. So need to go back to basics on that too, but I honestly thought he could wait a few more minutes as already been for his morning toilet.
I need to start monitoring accidents and any improvements to motivate myself.
On positive note he has become a lot less bitey, although teething will start soon so that could change, but he doesn't go for hands/my clothing anymore.
And another positive after his morning wee at 5.21 when I put him back to crate until 6, he was just sitting there quietly and not whining. I think he is used to this routine now, and even though he doesn't go back to sleep he just waits for me now :)

GinThereDoneThat · 07/05/2018 07:46

Night one with puppy - complete and I'm not dead yet!

She woke from her nap at about 10:30pm and played for a little bit and had a wee in the garden, then slept through in the crate with the door closed no complaints until 5am, where she was still quiet!! I slept on the sofa with her and woke up regularly expecting her to be awake and crying🙄
Then at 5 I took her out to the toilet, played till half past, then she had a sleep on the cushion in front of my sofa bed and when she was tired and snoozy I moved her back into the crate where she let me sleep until 7:30 Grin
I'm sure tonight will be considerably less fantastic now she's settled in!

ThisMorningWentBadly · 08/05/2018 09:45

Sounds promising Gin.

Badlypup still doing well. Today we will be practicing Stay and recapping Recall (as ma’am is beginning to think it is optional).

GinThereDoneThat · 08/05/2018 10:17

She hasn't got a very good attention span but "come here" seems to be going well so far Hmm first visit to the vets in two hours and hoping she can get her jab booked in asap. Then she's straight to puppy training classes!!

Elphame · 08/05/2018 17:59

Today I glimpsed the light at the end of the puppy tunnel.

I let Elfpup off lead and his recall was spot on - ok no distractions but he came! He even reverted to his old puppy trick of deliberately hanging back and watching me until I called him and he could get a treat (little monkey).

Even better we met the very elderly Cav that he's been trying to bully into playing for the last 6 months. Today though he just went over to say hello and then went off to investigate a smell whilst I had a chat with her human and then (wonder of wonders) he left her to follow me as we went our separate ways. This is huge!

I'm sure he'll revert to normal tomorrow!

Anyone's pup have a daily mad-hour or two? Ours does. Last night she crashed into patio windows head on! Must have lost a brain cell or several! Joked to DS that 'she's ok, I just had to pop her eyes back in!' 😂😂😂. Any tips on dealing with mad-hour???

geekone · 10/05/2018 10:03

If there is @Tinkobell then let me know crazy hour sends me demented

GinThereDoneThat · 10/05/2018 10:35

Same - she runs faster than Usain Bolt Grin

Had one wake up whine last night, wee, cry a bit then popped her in the pen as opposed to the crate. Total silence. I think tonight may be my last sleeping on the sofa all night night, and hope for the best Grin

She just responded well to treats to practice 'Sit' and 'stay', not sure it will stick but she showed initiative so I'm happy with that! She's on a the Clix lead at the minute, breaking her in Grin two weeks and I'll be able to take her out properly wooohooooooo!!

Posted on another thread like a dickhead. Here is my ramblings for this morning.

Gin I am a fairly pragmatic type of person but in the early months I felt a huge amount of responsibility and anxiety. It really is pretty common amongst us puppy owners.
